Civil Service Fast Stream explained

The application window for 2027 entry to the Civil Service Fast Stream runs from midday on 8 October 2026 to midday on 5 November 2026, and you can only apply while it is open. Selection has four stages: online tests, an additional information stage for some schemes, a half-day virtual assessment centre, and a final selection board for most schemes. The Fast Stream profile describes the programme itself.

Stage one: the application

You register an account with a personal email address, not a work or university one, and register only one account. If duplicate accounts are suspected, the application may be withdrawn. The Fast Stream suggests a Gmail address because successful applicants need a Google account for onboarding.

You choose up to 3 schemes and give background information, including diversity questions that are used for monitoring only and do not affect the outcome. Eligibility differs by scheme, so check before you pick. If you need adjustments, say so in this first application and give as much detail as you can. Our guide to asking for reasonable adjustments explains how to word a request.

Stage two: the online tests

Your tests can take a few days to appear after you submit, and you are emailed when they are ready. You have 7 days from then to finish both. They are untimed.

Test What it measures Format
Work-based scenarios Interpersonal skills 12 video scenarios. You rate how effective several actions would be.
Case study assessment Decision-making and adapting to change You take an imaginary role, read 7 pieces of background information, then respond to 24 situations.

Ratings use four labels: counterproductive, ineffective, partially effective and effective. In some case study questions you pick the most and least effective response instead. Results should be available in December 2026, and everyone gets feedback on their performance whether or not they progress. The feedback does not say whether you will go through, because the process is highly competitive. Other Civil Service tests are covered in Civil Service online tests.

The video summary on the same site mentions a third test, while the current written pages list two. Follow the instructions in your own applicant homepage.

Stage three: additional information

Only some schemes ask for this: Diplomatic and Development, Diplomatic and Development Economist, Government Economics Service, Government Social Research, Government Statistical Service, Risk Management, Project Delivery, Government Operational Research Service and House of Parliament. It may include motivational questions and academic details. A new section appears on your applicant homepage, you can answer in any order, and you have 7 days to finish.

Assessors aim to mark your answers within 2 weeks. There is no individual feedback at this stage, because the information is anonymised before review.

Stage four: the virtual assessment centre

If you pass, you attend the Fast Stream Assessment Centre online. It lasts half a day, on a virtual platform on your laptop, and has three exercises: a written exercise, an oral briefing exercise and a personal development conversation. The site publishes a full guide with example exercises. For general advice on this format, see assessment centres.

Final selection board

If you succeed at the assessment centre for one of the listed schemes, you attend a specialist assessment called a final selection board, which tests skills specific to your scheme. Schemes with a board include Commercial, Finance, HR, Operational Delivery, Project Delivery, Property, Risk Management, Science and Engineering, Social Research and Statistics, among others. The Government Policy, Cyber Security and Digital schemes have no board. The board guide arrives with your invitation.

Successful candidates then hear from the onboarding team about a formal offer, pre-employment checks and how they will be placed in a first post. Nationality requirements are covered in the Civil Service nationality rules. For comparison with other routes, see graduate schemes in the public sector.
