How to become a design and technology teacher
Design and technology (D&T) is one of the subjects schools in England find hardest to staff, and the funding reflects that: trainees starting in 2026/27 can get a £20,000 tax-free bursary. You need a degree with enough design, engineering or materials content and qualified teacher status (QTS). Much of the job happens in a workshop, so safety training on machines and tools is part of becoming a D&T teacher. Pay follows the national teachers’ ranges, from £34,069 outside London.
Degrees and backgrounds that fit
Providers accept a wide range of degrees for D&T: product design, industrial design, engineering of most kinds, architecture, materials science, fashion and textiles, and food science or nutrition for the food side. They look for enough knowledge to teach designing and making with several materials, such as timbers, metals, polymers, textiles and electronics.
Many D&T trainees come from industry. If you have worked as an engineer, designer or technician, you already know how products are made and tested. Where your degree or experience leaves gaps, a provider may ask you to take a subject knowledge enhancement course before you start. You also need GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above.
Funding for 2026/27
| Funding | Amount |
|---|---|
| Bursary (fee-funded courses) | £20,000 |
| Grant to the school (salaried School Direct and teaching apprenticeships) | Same per-subject amount as the bursary |
| Scholarship | None listed for D&T |
The bursary is tax-free and does not need to be repaid. You cannot get it on a salaried route, where you are paid a trainee salary instead. If you are a veteran, a separate veterans’ bursary of £40,000 is available on eligible courses. The teacher training bursaries guide explains the conditions.
Training routes
The routes are a university PGCE, a SCITT, School Direct (fee-funded or salaried), a postgraduate teaching apprenticeship and Teach First. Because D&T is a shortage subject, salaried and apprenticeship places are more common than in subjects such as history, and career changers often prefer them because they pay a salary during training. The training routes guide compares them.
After you gain QTS you complete statutory induction as an early career teacher, lasting the full-time equivalent of two school years. Maintained schools must provide it; academies and independent schools may offer it.
Workshop safety
A D&T classroom has pillar drills, band saws, laser cutters, soldering stations and hand tools, and a full class of pupils using them, so safety comes into almost everything you do. You write risk assessments for practical activities, check that guards and extraction work, decide which machines pupils may use and under what supervision, and teach safe use before anyone touches a tool.
Many schools expect D&T teachers to be formally trained and assessed in the safe use of the machines in their workshops, often against the British Standard for health and safety in D&T in schools. Training is usually provided or arranged by your training course or employer, and some schools use external providers. If you are moving schools, expect to be checked again on any machines you have not used before. Food rooms have their own hygiene and allergy rules.
Most D&T departments have a technician who maintains machines, prepares materials and helps in practical lessons. The D&T technician profile describes that job. A good working relationship with your technician makes the workload much more manageable.
What you teach
At key stage 3, D&T is often taught on a rotation, with classes moving between materials such as wood, metal, plastics, textiles, electronics and food every few weeks. GCSE design and technology combines a written exam with a substantial non-exam assessment, where pupils design and make a product over several months. A level product design follows the same pattern at a higher level. You guide each pupil’s project individually, and that takes time, especially in the term before deadlines.
Computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) is now a normal part of the subject, so you need to be confident with design software and machines such as laser cutters and 3D printers.
Pay and progression
From 1 September 2026 the main pay range for maintained schools in England runs from £34,069 (M1) to £46,940 (M6) outside London, and from £41,729 to £54,131 in inner London, following a 3.5 per cent award. The rates are in the draft 2026 pay and conditions document, which is expected in force around early November and backdated. Academies can set their own pay. See teacher pay scales in England for all areas.
Shortage subjects often bring quicker progression. Leading D&T, or a wider technology faculty, usually comes with a TLR payment, and TLR2 is worth £3,651 to £8,913 from September 2026. You pay into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme at 7.4 per cent on a salary up to £36,198.99. The take-home pay calculator shows the monthly figure after deductions.
Getting started
Visit a secondary D&T department during a practical lesson to see how the room is run. Applications for training go through the DfE’s Apply for teacher training service, and qualified posts appear on Teaching Vacancies and under teaching jobs. The bursary applies to England only; Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own training and funding arrangements.
Common questions
Do D&T teachers teach food as well?
It depends on the school. Food preparation and nutrition is a separate GCSE, but many schools include food in the key stage 3 D&T rotation and some D&T teachers teach it. Specialist food teachers usually train on a D&T course with a food focus.
Can I train if my degree is in engineering?
Yes. Engineering is one of the most common backgrounds for D&T trainees. Providers check that you can cover the design side and the range of materials taught in schools, and may suggest a subject knowledge enhancement course.
