Prison officer in Northern Ireland

The main uniformed job in the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) is Custody Prison Officer (CPO). The July 2026 competition advertised it at £32,510 to £42,725 a year, marked “under review”, plus a supplementary risk allowance of £4,284 a year and a boot allowance of £92.80 a year. Applications go through the NICS recruitment website, selection includes aptitude tests, a fitness test and an assessment centre, and successful candidates start with a 12-week induction.

What the job involves

CPOs carry out operational and custodial duties. In the NIPS’s own words, that includes conducting searches, controlling movement within the prison and maintaining order and discipline. The candidate booklet also lists encouraging prisoners to take part in activities, contributing to sentence planning and risk management, headcounts and lock and unlock routines, and responding to emergencies.

You may be posted to any establishment in Northern Ireland for your whole career. At the time of the 2026 competition these were Maghaberry Prison, Magilligan Prison, and Hydebank Wood College and Women’s Prison. Officers are a mobile grade, so you can be moved permanently or on detached duty, and you pay your own daily travel to your base. Some CPO posts in the trades departments are for qualified plumbers, electricians and joiners.

Entry requirements

The Department of Justice page does not give a list of formal qualifications, and the booklet’s essential criteria are specific to each competition. Expect to be screened on the criteria in the booklet for the competition you apply to, and read it first. See how to apply for Northern Ireland Civil Service jobs for how that process works.

Some conditions are fixed:

  • Vetting: security clearance at Counter Terrorist Check level and an enhanced AccessNI check. CTC normally expects three years’ UK residency in the past three, though it is not an absolute requirement. See security clearance levels and AccessNI checks.
  • Health: you have to be physically and psychologically capable of the work. The 2024 booklet sets a body mass index range of 19 to 30, which is not in itself a bar if there is no impairment of function, and eyesight standards.
  • Tattoos: the booklet says a tattoo does not necessarily prevent you serving, but tattoos on the head, face, neck and hands, or ones that cannot be covered by uniform, get careful consideration. Offensive tattoos are unacceptable whether visible or not, and you may have to supply photographs.
  • Declarations: you have to declare all previous convictions, spent or otherwise, but a record is not necessarily a bar.

The selection stages

The 2024 booklet set out these stages, ending in a merit list:

  1. Online application form.
  2. Formal screening of applications.
  3. Online aptitude tests and a questionnaire, proctored by webcam.
  4. A physical fitness test with tasks such as an incremental walk test, a mannequin drag and a grip test, replicating the job.
  5. A Skills and Behaviours Assessment Centre.
  6. New Entrant Prison Officer induction training.

The Department of Justice says it welcomes applications from Roman Catholics, women, people under 35, people with a disability and people from minority ethnic communities. All applications are considered on merit.

Training and probation

Recruits do a 12-week induction at the Prison Service College, then complete a development programme accredited through Ulster University to attain the Certificate of Competence. It combines study with practical assessments and written work, and the booklet expected it to be finished within 15 months. Passing it is mandatory for continued employment and for pay progression. Probation lasts one year.

Hours and leave

A CPO’s shift pattern is based on a 39-hour week, averaged over a shift cycle that includes evenings, weekends, nights and public and privilege holidays. The 2024 booklet gave leave as 25 days rising to 30 after five years’ service, plus 12 days’ public and privilege holidays, calculated in hours.

Pay

The £32,510 to £42,725 range comes from the closed 2026 competition, and the department marked it as under review. Starting salary is at the bottom of the scale, with progression under NIPS pay policy. The 2024 booklet’s lower figures are out of date. Common questions

Do prison officers in Northern Ireland get extra pay for weekends?

The 2024 candidate booklet says no additional payments or premiums are paid for working weekends or public and privilege holidays. The role does carry a supplementary risk allowance, which was £4,284 a year in the 2026 competition.

Can I apply with a criminal record?

The booklet says a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar, but you must declare all convictions, cautions and fixed penalty tickets, whether spent or not, because the exceptions order applies to the Prison Service.
