Theatre support worker

Theatre support workers do the practical jobs that let surgery happen on time: transferring patients, setting up trolleys and kit, restocking, and helping the registered team. You do not need a degree or a clinical registration. Posts are usually advertised at band 2 or band 3, which pay £25,272 at band 2 and £25,760 to £27,476 at band 3 in England from 1 April 2026.

What the work involves

A typical shift starts before the first patient arrives. You check that each theatre has the sterile packs, consumables and equipment listed for the day’s operations, and report anything missing. During the list you bring patients from the ward or reception area, help move them onto the operating table with the team, and clean and reset the theatre between cases. You may also label and send specimens, pass items into the sterile field when asked, and take used instruments to the decontamination unit.

Titles vary by trust. Vacancies can say theatre support worker, theatre assistant, theatre healthcare assistant or anaesthetic assistant. Duties overlap, though anaesthetic roles tend to mean more work alongside the anaesthetic team, such as preparing monitoring equipment.

Band 2 or band 3

Band 2 posts are the entry level and expect you to work under direct supervision, often with a set routine. Band 3 posts carry more responsibility. You might prepare certain equipment independently, support students or newer staff, or work in a specialist theatre. Each trust’s job description sets out the difference, so read the person specification closely, as explained in how to read a job description.

Band Pay from 1 April 2026 (England)
2 £25,272
3, entry £25,760
3, after 2 years £27,476

Scotland uses its own pay points: Band 2 runs from £26,658 to £28,947 and Band 3 from £29,061 to £31,364 for 2026/27. Wales is reported to have followed the 3.3% England award, and Northern Ireland’s award was unconfirmed on 16 October 2026. In London a high cost area supplement is added. See NHS band 3 pay for more, and the take-home pay calculator for the after-tax figure.

Shift work brings extras. Nights, weekends and public holidays attract unsocial hours enhancements, and on-call rotas are paid separately. Both depend on the trust.

What employers ask for

Entry requirements are modest. Employers usually ask for good literacy and numeracy, often shown by GCSEs or an equivalent, though some accept experience instead. Previous healthcare or hospital experience helps, and so does anything showing you can stay calm and follow procedures. Because you work with patients, you will need an enhanced DBS check, occupational health clearance and references covering the last three years. These are standard pre-employment checks (see pre-employment checks).

Some trusts ask for or provide training such as a Level 2 or Level 3 diploma or the Care Certificate. If you are new to the NHS, an apprenticeship may be an option, covered in NHS apprenticeships.

Where it can lead

Many staff use the job as a stepping stone. A spell in theatres shows you whether you want to train as an operating department practitioner, a nurse or a surgical care practitioner. Trusts sometimes fund apprenticeship routes for existing staff, and a theatre support worker with experience is a credible candidate. Others stay and move up to band 3 or into a team leader role.

Conditions to expect

The work is physical. You lift, push trolleys and stand for long periods, and you may see distressing sights. Lists can overrun, which means finishing late. Hours depend on the theatre: elective surgery is mostly daytime, while emergency and trauma theatres run around the clock.

Annual leave under Agenda for Change is 27 days on appointment, rising to 29 after five years and 33 after ten, plus eight public holidays. NHS Pension Scheme membership is automatic for most new starters, and contributions at your pay level are 6.5% for pay between £13,260 and £28,854 (see the NHS Pension Scheme).

Applying

Theatre support roles are advertised on NHS Jobs. Applications normally need a supporting statement, so use the person specification as a checklist and give a short example for each point. Current openings are listed in healthcare support jobs.
