Ambulance technician pay

Most emergency medical technician (EMT) jobs are paid at band 4 of Agenda for Change, according to Health Careers. In England from 1 April 2026 that means £28,392 at the bottom and £31,157 at the top, with three years on the entry point before the top rate. Trainees may get a percentage of the band 4 rate that rises to the full rate once they qualify.

Band 4 pay in England

Point Annual Hourly
Band 4 entry £28,392 £14.52
Band 4 top (after 3 years) £31,157 £15.93

Those are the basic rates in the NHS Employers 2026/27 pay scales. The band 4 guide covers the other jobs on the same band. In inner London the same band 4 entry point is £34,186 once the high cost area supplement is included, and in outer London it is £33,262.

The route in is a level 4 apprenticeship, which usually takes 12 to 18 months and starts with a classroom course before you respond to calls on the road. You need a full UK manual driving licence with at least a year’s experience and a full C1 category when you apply. The advert should say what percentage of band 4 you are paid while training.

Unsocial hours on top

Ambulance work runs round the clock, and the national rules pay extra for it. For staff who started or changed role from 1 September 2018, the NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook adds the following to the hourly rate. Bands 4 to 9 get the same percentages.

When Band 4 enhancement
Saturdays, and weekdays between 8pm and 6am 30%
Sundays and public holidays 60%

Take the entry rate of £14.52 an hour. A Saturday or night hour pays about £18.88, and a Sunday or bank holiday hour about £23.23. At the top rate of £15.93 those become £20.71 and £25.49. The enhancement is worked out on basic salary, so it does not include the London supplement. The handbook also says only one rate applies per hour worked.

Ambulance staff in England who joined before 1 September 2018 could choose to move to these rules or stay on an older system, so a long-serving colleague may be paid differently from you. The night shift pay and unsocial hours guides explain the rules in more detail.

Hours and leave

The standard NHS week is 37.5 hours, and ambulance shifts cover every day of the year. Health Careers gives 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays for the role. Part-time contracts are paid pro rata.

Moving up

Health Careers says EMTs can progress to team leader or supervisor roles, or apply to train as a paramedic. Paramedics start on band 5, and the paramedic pay guide shows what that is worth. The step from band 4 entry to band 5 entry is £3,681 a year in basic pay (£32,073 minus £28,392), before any unsocial hours.

If you are thinking about the level below, the emergency care assistant profile covers roles at band 3 or 4, and the emergency care assistant pay guide covers what they earn.

Pension and take-home pay

On the band 4 entry rate of £28,392 you pay 6.5% into the NHS Pension Scheme. At the top rate of £31,157 you pay 8.3%, because pay above £28,854 falls in the next tier. Income tax and National Insurance are charged on pay above £12,570. The take-home pay calculator works out monthly pay, and enhancements are taxable, so add them to your salary before you enter the figure.

Common questions

Is an ambulance technician the same as an emergency medical technician?

Employers use several titles for the same level of job. Health Careers lists associate ambulance practitioner and trainee emergency ambulance crew as other names for the emergency medical technician role. Check the job description and the band on the advert.

Do ambulance staff get unsocial hours pay?

Yes. Under the NHS terms and conditions, staff who start or change role from 1 September 2018 come under the standard unsocial hours rules. Staff who joined earlier may have stayed on an older arrangement.
