NHS band 3 take-home pay

A full-time NHS band 3 worker in England takes home about £1,727 a month on the entry point of £25,760 in 2026/27 and about £1,823 a month on the top point of £27,476, with the NHS pension taken out and no student loan. Band 3 covers senior healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, ward clerks and hospital administrators. This page uses a 1257L tax code and a 37.5-hour week.

Take-home pay at the two band 3 points

Pay point Gross salary Pension (6.5%) Income Tax National Insurance Monthly take-home
Entry (2 years) £25,760 £1,674.40 £2,303.12 £1,055.20 £1,727.27
Top £27,476 £1,785.94 £2,624.01 £1,192.48 £1,822.80

Both points are in the 6.5% NHS pension tier, which covers pensionable pay from £13,260 to £28,854. The deductions in the table are annual. Pension comes out before tax, so taxable pay at the entry point is £24,085.60 less the £12,570 allowance, which is how £2,303.12 of tax arises. National Insurance is charged at 8% on gross pay above £12,570.

The top point adds £1,716 a year gross and £95.53 a month in take-home pay. That is about 67 per cent of the rise, since there is no student loan and the pension tier does not change.

Student loans at band 3

The Plan 2 threshold is £29,385 and the Plan 4 threshold £33,795, so a band 3 salary triggers no repayment on either plan. Plan 1 begins at £26,900, so it takes 9% of the £576 above it at the top point, £51.84 a year, and nothing at entry. Plan 5 begins at £25,000, which is below the entry point, so a Plan 5 borrower repays 9% of the amount over it.

Pay point Plan 5 repayment a year Monthly take-home with Plan 5
Entry £68.40 £1,721.57
Top £222.84 £1,804.23

When enhancements tip the pension tier

Band 3 posts often include weekends and nights. In England the NHS handbook adds 35% of basic pay for Saturdays and weekday time between 8pm and 6am, and 69% for Sundays and public holidays. The payment is worked out on basic salary, and it counts as pensionable pay.

Pensionable pay sets your contribution rate for the whole amount. The next tier, 8.3%, begins at £28,855. That edge is only £1,378 above the top point of band 3, so a band 3 worker with regular weekend shifts can cross it.

Take a worker on the top point, £27,476, who earns £2,000 of enhancements over the year. That figure is hypothetical.

Basic pay only With £2,000 of enhancements
Pensionable pay £27,476 £29,476
Pension rate 6.5% 8.3%
Pension a year £1,785.94 £2,446.51
Monthly take-home, no loan £1,822.80 £1,898.76

Gross pay is up by £166.67 a month but take-home rises by £75.96, about 46 per cent. At the entry point, £25,760 plus the same £2,000 stays in the 6.5% tier, and take-home rises by £111.34 a month, about 67 per cent. The extra pension costs you cash now and builds a larger career average pension, which NHS Pension Scheme explained describes.

The higher rate also brings you to £29,476, just above the Plan 2 threshold of £29,385. A Plan 2 borrower would then repay £8.19 a year on the £91 above it.

Part-time hours

Tier placement uses actual pensionable pay, so part-time band 3 staff are placed by what they earn. A worker on 30 hours a week at the entry point earns about £20,608 and pays 6.5%, the same tier as a full-time colleague. Part-time workers on the NHS handbook terms also qualify for unsocial hours payments. Part-time take-home pay covers the tax effects of fewer hours.

Band 2 to band 3 and London

Band 2 is £25,272, so moving to band 3 entry adds £488 a year gross, about £27 a month after deductions. The band 3 pay guide covers the jobs and the step up. The London supplement is pensionable and raises gross pay, so London figures differ. To run your own numbers, use the take-home pay calculator.

Common questions

Do I repay a student loan on band 3 pay?

Not on Plan 2 or Plan 4, because band 3 pay is below their thresholds. Plan 1 starts at £26,900, so it only takes about £52 a year at the top point. Plan 5 starts at £25,000, so a Plan 5 borrower repays about £68 a year at the entry point and about £223 a year at the top point.
