DWP work coach application
A DWP work coach application usually has an online form, a written statement or an online assessment (sometimes both), an interview, and then offers in merit order. The exact mix depends on the campaign, and the advert says which elements apply. DWP lists the possible pieces on its recruitment site: a personal statement, a statement of suitability, a situational judgement test, a role suitability assessment and interviews. The work coach profile covers the job.
What the advert and the form check
Work coaches are executive officers based in a jobcentre. DWP’s site describes the contact as face to face, digital and telephone every day. Every applicant must be able to work on site, in person, at the jobcentre they are posted to.
Training is staggered classroom learning and consolidation over 31 days, delivered face to face and partly virtually. Contracts are based on a 42 hour week but you work 37 hours. You may be asked to work any time between 7.45am and 8pm Monday to Friday, and 8.45am to 5pm on Saturday, though a pattern is agreed once you start, with advance notice.
The form first asks whether you have the right to work in the UK and meet Civil Service nationality requirements. If you pass the interview, you provide proof of identity (including photo ID or an equivalent biometric passport or share code) and proof of address. The nationality rules guide lists who is eligible.
Written evidence
If a personal statement is required, it is 500 words showing one behaviour at the level for the job. A statement of suitability runs between 500 and 1,250 words and outlines why you fit the criteria in the advert. Once submitted, an application cannot be amended, and you should apply only once for a given campaign.
Remove personal details such as your name and contact details, or the application is withdrawn. The evidence must relate to your own experience, and plagiarism or sharing answers leads to withdrawal. DWP accepts that AI can help but points applicants to Civil Service guidance on using it. For how to write the evidence, see Civil Service behaviours and the STAR method.
The online tests
There are two possible test formats.
| Test | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Situational judgement test | Allow 30 to 45 minutes | Timed, multiple choice, one test per vacancy. |
| Role suitability assessment | Allow 40 to 50 minutes | A values-based part (15 to 20 minutes, untimed) then a timed capability part (20 to 28 minutes). |
No DWP knowledge is needed for either, and you cannot retake a test that is interrupted. Scoring is automated. The pass mark is set after the deadline, based on how many people applied, the range of scores and the number of vacancies, so meeting a minimum does not guarantee progress. For the role suitability assessment you must reach a minimum on each part, and the combined score has a maximum of 480.
You must pass the test before any written evidence is sifted. Sift results come with your score but without feedback, and if applications are numerous DWP may send everyone who passed the test straight to interview. Situational judgement tests explains how to approach the format.
The interview
The advert states the format: a pre-recorded video interview, a live Microsoft Teams call, a face-to-face interview, or a mix. For the pre-recorded version you have 5 days from the invitation email to complete it. Questions come from the Civil Service Success Profiles and may be behaviour questions, strength questions, or both.
For each behaviour question you get one minute to think and 3 minutes to answer. For each strength question you get 2 minutes 30 seconds, since strengths questions test your immediate response. DWP does not announce the strengths in advance. You cannot redo a completed answer, and the interviewers must be able to see and hear you clearly or they will not mark it. Our guides to strength-based interviews and Civil Service interview questions go through example questions.
Offers and locations
You may be asked for location preferences, so pick only places you are prepared to work. Offers go out in merit order. If none of your choices remain, DWP tries to offer a role within reasonable daily travelling distance, and failing that places you on a reserve list. Reasonable adjustments and technical problems go to the SSCL Customer Hub. See Civil Service reserve lists and use the take-home pay calculator once the advert gives a salary.
Common questions
Can I do the work coach job part time?
DWP's recruitment site says part-time and job share candidates must work full time for a number of weeks to complete and consolidate training. After that, the pattern depends on the team and the advert.
What happens if my preferred jobcentre is full?
Offers go out in merit order, so your preferred locations may no longer be available. DWP then tries a role within reasonable daily travelling distance, and if it cannot, you go on a reserve list.
