Public sector jobs in Bradford
Schools are the most common route into public sector work in Bradford. The district has a young population, so its schools employ a large number of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff. The other major employers are the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, two acute hospital trusts (Bradford Teaching Hospitals and Airedale) and the West Yorkshire police and fire services. Jobs are spread across a wide area that takes in Keighley, Shipley, Bingley and Ilkley as well as the city itself.
The district beyond the city centre
The council area covers much more than Bradford city centre. It runs from the inner-city wards out to the Aire and Wharfe valleys and into moorland villages. A council job based in Keighley or a school in Ilkley can be a long trip from the south of the city without a car, and NHS staff may be asked to work across sites. Check the base on any advert before applying.
The council employs staff in social care, children’s services, housing, environmental services, libraries, parks and highways. Pay is on the NJC spine, which rose by 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026, with SCP 3 at £25,614. The council has been under significant financial pressure, so restructures and recruitment freezes in some services are possible, and you can reasonably ask about this at interview.
School jobs
Bradford’s schools include maintained schools and many academies in multi-academy trusts. Vacancies cover teaching, teaching assistant and SEN support, cover supervision, office and finance work, midday supervision, cleaning and site management.
Teaching assistants are usually paid on the NJC spine and employed term-time only. Under the standard method most councils use, a teaching assistant working 39 weeks a year with a 36-day leave comparator gets about 86.8 per cent of the full-time salary, before any reduction for working fewer than 37 hours a week. A role advertised at SCP 5 (£26,427 full time) would therefore pay less than that figure in practice. How term-time-only pay is calculated shows the working, and take-home pay for a teaching assistant carries it through to net pay.
Teachers are paid on the England scales. From 1 September 2026, M1 is £34,069 and the upper pay range runs from £49,134 to £52,835, under the award the government accepted in July 2026. Maintained schools apply it once the 2026 pay document is in force.
With no school experience yet, volunteering, midday supervision or cover roles are common first steps. How to get a job in a school with no experience goes through them, and the teaching assistant profile explains what schools look for.
Hospitals and health
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital. Airedale NHS Foundation Trust runs Airedale General Hospital near Keighley and community services in the Aire valley. Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability and community services. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers emergency calls.
NHS pay from 1 April 2026 starts at £25,272 for band 2, with band 3 at £25,760 to £27,476 and band 5 at £32,073 to £39,043. There is no local supplement. The two acute trusts share the same pay scale, so the differences are location, shift patterns and the services each runs. Airedale suits people living in the north of the district, while Bradford Royal Infirmary is easier to reach from the city and the south.
Police and fire
West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service cover Bradford alongside Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. A constable starts at £32,255 (PP1) from 1 September 2026, and a firefighter in development earns £31,539 from 1 July 2026.
Applying
Most school jobs are on the Department for Education’s Teaching Vacancies service, which is free to use, though some trusts also post on their own sites. Safer recruitment rules mean school applications use forms instead of CVs, and they need two references and an enhanced DBS check with a children’s barred list check. Council jobs are on the council’s own site, and NHS jobs on NHS Jobs.
