Public sector jobs in Ballymena
Ballymena is in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust area, whose two acute hospitals are Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital. Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, which covers Ballymena and Larne, recruits locally, and schools, the Education Authority, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the civil service add more posts. Pay and recruitment follow Northern Ireland systems, so English figures often do not apply.
The Northern Trust and Antrim Area Hospital
The Northern Trust covers 1,733 square miles across four council areas: Antrim and Newtownabbey, Causeway Coast and Glens, Mid and East Antrim, and Mid Ulster. It serves about 470,000 people and employs 11,900 staff. Acute services are at Antrim Area Hospital and Causeway Hospital in Coleraine. The HSC jobs site lists outpatient services at Antrim, Causeway, Whiteabbey, Mid Ulster, Braid Valley and Moyle hospitals, and a 115-bed psychiatric hospital in Antrim, with community services from about 300 facilities.
The Trust’s own hospitals page lists eight hospitals: Antrim Area, Causeway, Dalriada in Ballycastle, Holywell in Antrim, Mid Ulster in Magherafelt, Moyle in Larne, Robinson in Ballymoney and Whiteabbey in Newtownabbey. It does not list a Ballymena site. Trust jobs are on the HSC jobs site, not NHS Jobs.
Staff are on Agenda for Change bands. The 2026/27 award had no confirmed payment date in October 2026, because funding depends on the Northern Ireland Executive. See Agenda for Change in Northern Ireland.
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council
The council covers Ballymena, Larne and the areas around them. It runs waste, leisure, parks, planning, building control, environmental health and local economic development. Education, social care, roads and housing sit with other bodies.
The council’s FAQ says available jobs are posted on its GetGot website, and it points to nidirect for general jobs and skills advice. The jobs link on the council site leads to the GetGot portal, where each post sets out its own application form. Its Labour Market Partnership, funded by the Department for Communities, brings together the council, statutory bodies and local employment stakeholders to tackle unemployment and economic inactivity, and it runs programmes that build skills, experience and qualifications. The phone number given on its page is 028 2563 3345.
Council pay follows the NJC Green Book scales. A 3.3 per cent award for 2026/27 has been agreed and backdated to 1 April 2026, although each employer decides when it is paid. Local council jobs in Northern Ireland compares terms across the 11 councils.
Schools and the Education Authority
Teachers in Northern Ireland have their own pay scale and no M1 point. After the 4 per cent award from 1 September 2025, M2 is £32,916, M4 is £37,809 and M6 is £43,830. The upper pay scale is £47,390, £49,104 and £50,876. No 2026/27 offer had been confirmed by October 2026. Teachers register with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland. See teacher pay in Northern Ireland.
Teaching posts are normally advertised by the school or its managing body. The Education Authority recruits classroom assistants and school support staff. See Education Authority jobs.
Police, fire and the civil service
The PSNI recruits through periodic campaigns, and its pay is set separately from England and Wales. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service follows the UK-wide NJC fire award: firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
The Northern Ireland Civil Service recruits through HRConnect, mostly in general competitions for grades such as administrative officer and executive officer. A pass puts you on a merit list, and offers can come months later for posts anywhere in Northern Ireland, so check where you would work before applying. NICS jobs: how to apply explains the process. Belfast is where most departments are based, and the Belfast guide lists them.
Checks and tax
AccessNI runs the criminal record checks. Basic and standard checks cost £16 and enhanced checks cost £32. Roles with children or vulnerable adults need an enhanced check, and your employer normally starts the application. Income tax and National Insurance are the same as in England, so most people have a 1257L tax code and the take-home pay calculator applies.
