Public sector jobs in Bath

Bath and North East Somerset Council and the Royal United Hospital are the two largest public sector employers in Bath. The council is a unitary authority, so it runs every local service from social care to bin collections, and the hospital trust recruits for clinical, admin and support roles on its site in the west of the city. Schools, the regional mental health and ambulance trusts, and the police and fire services make up most of the rest, and Bristol is close enough to add a much larger job market.

One council for everything

Bath and North East Somerset Council, usually shortened to B&NES, has been a unitary authority since 1996. It covers Bath itself plus Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and the villages in between, and has offices in both Bath and Keynsham. With no county council above it, adult and children’s social care, education services, planning, housing, highways, waste and public health all sit with the one employer. How councils are organised sets out the difference between unitary and two-tier areas.

Less usually for a council, B&NES also runs the Roman Baths and other museums in the city through its heritage service. Visitor services, collections and retail jobs there are council posts on council terms, and museum and heritage assistant jobs covers what that work involves.

Council pay follows the NJC pay spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026 after the 3.3 per cent award. Each council fits its own grades onto the spine, so an advert gives the grade and its spine points. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. In 2026/27 a member earning £18,401 to £29,000 pays 5.8 per cent in the main section, and someone on £29,001 to £47,300 pays 6.5 per cent.

The Royal United Hospital and other NHS employers

Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal United Hospital, known locally as the RUH, at Combe Park. It is the acute hospital for Bath and a catchment that reaches into Wiltshire and Somerset, so it recruits across nursing, theatres, diagnostics, therapies, estates and administration.

Mental health services in the area are provided by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust handles 999 calls across the South West. All of them pay Agenda for Change rates for England. Bath is well outside the London and fringe zones, so there is no high cost area supplement on top.

Band Pay from 1 April 2026
Band 2 £25,272
Band 3 £25,760 to £27,476
Band 4 £28,392 to £31,157
Band 5 £32,073 to £39,043
Band 6 £39,959 to £48,117

These are full-time annual figures after the 3.3 per cent award, and part-time staff are paid pro rata.

Schools

Schools in Bath are a mix of council-maintained schools and academies, many of them run by multi-academy trusts with schools across the wider area. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the award accepted in July 2026, rising to £46,940 at M6. Maintained schools can only pay the new rates once the 2026 pay document is in force, and the increase is then backdated to September. Academies set their own pay policies, though most follow the national scale.

Teaching assistants, admin staff and other support roles are on the NJC spine and are often term-time only, which means the annual salary on the advert is lower than the full-time figure. How term-time-only pay is calculated walks through the sum.

Police and fire

Avon and Somerset Police covers Bath as part of a force area that runs from Bristol down to Somerset, with its headquarters at Portishead. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reaches £52,015 at the top of the scale. The force also employs police staff in control rooms, investigations and support functions, whose pay is set locally.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service covers Bath along with Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. Under the national award from 1 July 2026, firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent.

Living costs and the Bristol option

National pay scales do not change with local housing costs, and Bath is one of the more expensive places in the South West to rent or buy. A band 5 nurse or a council officer on SCP 20 (£33,673) is paid the same in Bath as in a much cheaper town. Run your likely salary through the take-home pay calculator before you compare rents.

Bristol is a short train ride away and has far more public sector jobs: several large hospitals, a bigger council and the Ministry of Defence’s Abbey Wood site, home of Defence Equipment and Support. Public sector jobs in Bristol covers those employers, and many people living in either city work in the other.
