Public sector jobs in Barnsley
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council are the two largest public employers in Barnsley. Schools and Barnsley College come next, and South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and Yorkshire Ambulance Service all have bases in the borough. Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds are within commuting distance, so there are more NHS, council and Civil Service jobs to choose from.
What the hospital pays
Barnsley Hospital is the borough’s acute hospital with an emergency department. It recruits nurses, midwives, healthcare support workers, radiographers, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals, plus porters, domestic staff, catering staff and admin teams. Mental health and learning disability services in Barnsley are provided by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which also covers Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale.
Both trusts pay on Agenda for Change for England, which rose 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026:
| Band | Typical Barnsley jobs | Pay from 1 April 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Band 2 | Domestic, porter, housekeeper | £25,272 |
| Band 3 | Healthcare support worker, ward clerk | £25,760 to £27,476 |
| Band 4 | Senior admin, assistant practitioner | £28,392 to £31,157 |
| Band 5 | Newly registered nurse or AHP | £32,073 to £39,043 |
| Band 6 | Experienced nurse, specialist AHP | £39,959 to £48,117 |
South Yorkshire has no high cost area supplement, so these are the basic rates. NHS pension contributions come off the top: on pay between £13,260 and £28,854 the 2026/27 rate is 6.5 per cent, and between £28,855 and £35,155 it is 8.3 per cent. How to become a healthcare assistant covers the most common way into hospital work without a degree, and NHS Agenda for Change pay bands has the full table.
Barnsley Council
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council runs schools support, children’s and adult social care, housing, highways, waste collection, libraries and public health. Its vacancies are on its own jobs site. Council jobs are paid on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) after the 3.3 per cent award from 1 April 2026.
Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme and get at least 23 days’ annual leave plus eight bank holidays and two extra days, rising to 26 days after five years’ service. Social work posts are among the council’s most frequent vacancies, and how to become a children’s social worker sets out the qualifications.
Schools and college
Many Barnsley schools are academies, often part of multi-academy trusts, so the employer for a school job is often the trust. Teachers are paid on the national scales, with M1 at £34,069 and M6 at £46,940 outside London from 1 September 2026, once the 2026 pay and conditions document is in force. Academy trusts set their own pay policies but usually follow the national figures. Teaching assistants and other support staff are mainly on the NJC spine and paid term-time only, which reduces the actual salary below the full-time figure on the advert.
School jobs are listed on Teaching Vacancies, the free Department for Education site, and on trust websites. Barnsley College recruits lecturers, assessors and support staff separately, on its own pay scales.
Police, fire and ambulance
South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue cover Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. A new police constable starts on £32,255 (PP1) from 1 September 2026, rising through the scale to £52,015 at PP7. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust recruits paramedics, emergency care assistants and call handlers for the whole region.
Working outside the borough
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is based in Sheffield, and Wakefield has the headquarters of West Yorkshire Police. Commuting changes your costs more than your tax, since income tax and National Insurance are the same across England. Put any offer through the take-home pay calculator before comparing.
