Public sector jobs in Wakefield

For a city of its size, Wakefield has an unusual number of regional headquarters. West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust are all run from Wakefield. Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield Council, a high-security prison and the district’s schools mean that regional, clinical and local government jobs all turn up within a few miles.

Headquarters jobs

West Yorkshire Police has its headquarters in Wakefield. Alongside officer recruitment, a headquarters brings police staff jobs in finance, HR, IT, analysis, professional standards, forensic support and training. Since 2021 the elected mayor of West Yorkshire has carried out the police and crime commissioner role, and that office recruits a small team of its own.

Constables appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026. The scale then rises each year through £33,609, £34,972 and £36,335 to £39,058, £44,544 and £52,015 at the top. Police staff are paid on the force’s own grades, published on each advert.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust also has its headquarters in Wakefield. Its emergency operations and 111 staff take calls for the whole of Yorkshire, and it recruits paramedics, emergency care assistants, call handlers, dispatchers and support staff. 999 ambulance call handler describes the control room jobs, and paramedic pay covers how ambulance clinicians are banded.

Pinderfields and mental health services

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust runs Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, Pontefract Hospital and Dewsbury and District Hospital. Pinderfields is the main acute site, with an emergency department and a regional burns unit. Some posts are based at one hospital and some cover all three.

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust runs mental health, learning disability and some community services across Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale and Barnsley, with its headquarters at Fieldhead in Wakefield.

NHS employers here pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026. Band 3 runs from £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. NHS Pension Scheme contributions come off your whole pensionable pay: 6.5 per cent on £13,260 to £28,854, 8.3 per cent on £28,855 to £35,155 and 9.8 per cent on £35,156 to £52,778.

Wakefield Council

The City of Wakefield is a metropolitan district, so Wakefield Council runs all local services from social care and education to bins, housing and planning, across the city and towns such as Castleford, Pontefract and Ossett. Its main offices are in the city centre.

The council pays on the NJC spine, from £25,614 at SCP 3 to £56,293 at SCP 43 from 1 April 2026. Green Book leave is at least 23 days plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme.

HMP Wakefield

HMP Wakefield is a high-security men’s prison in the city. HM Prison and Probation Service recruits prison officers, operational support grades and other staff for it through its own recruitment site, with pay set nationally and shown on each advert. Security procedures in a high-security prison are stricter than in most other jails, and so is the vetting. How to become a prison officer covers the tests and the training course.

Schools and fire

Wakefield Council is the local authority for maintained schools, and many secondaries belong to academy trusts. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, and maintained schools pay the new rates, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are on the NJC spine and are usually paid term-time only, which brings the annual amount well below the full-time salary shown on the advert. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has stations in the district, with firefighters on £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.

Leeds is about 15 minutes away by train and has a much bigger public sector job market, including Civil Service offices and a large teaching hospital trust. Public sector jobs in Leeds covers what is there.
