Public sector jobs in Sheffield

Education is a bigger part of Sheffield’s public sector than in most cities. As well as its schools and colleges, the city has a large Department for Education office, so you can work on national schools policy, funding or data without going to London. Health is the other major employer, led by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with Sheffield City Council and the South Yorkshire emergency services making up most of the rest.

Education: from classrooms to policy

The Department for Education has offices in Sheffield city centre, and its vacancies there cover policy, analysis, digital, finance and operations. They are advertised on Civil Service Jobs at grades from administrative officer upwards. Departments set their own pay ranges per grade, so compare the salary on the advert, not the grade name. Civil Service departments and agencies explains how departments and their agencies differ.

In schools, the national teacher scales apply. From 1 September 2026 the government accepted these rates for England outside London:

Point Salary
M1 £34,069
M3 £38,400
M6 £46,940
U1 £49,134
U3 £52,835

Maintained schools can apply them once the 2026 pay and conditions document comes into force, with backdating to 1 September 2026. Academy trusts set their own pay policies but most mirror the national scales. The full set of ranges is in teacher pay scales in England.

If you are training to teach, bursaries for 2026/27 are £29,000 for chemistry, computing, maths and physics and £20,000 for design and technology and languages. Sheffield has two universities and school-led training providers; teacher training routes in England compares the options.

Hospitals and health services

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Northern General, Royal Hallamshire and several other sites. Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust runs the children’s hospital and community services for children, and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and learning disability services. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers the region.

Pay follows Agenda for Change for England from 1 April 2026. Healthcare support workers usually start at band 2 (£25,272) or band 3 (£25,760 to £27,476). Registered nurses and allied health professionals start at band 5 (£32,073 to £39,043). There is no local supplement in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield City Council

Sheffield City Council is the unitary authority for the city. It runs social care, housing, highways, waste, libraries, parks and support for schools, and it employs many school support staff in maintained schools. Council jobs are paid on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) after the 3.3 per cent award from 1 April 2026.

Teaching assistants, midday supervisors and other school staff usually work term-time only. Their salary is a percentage of the full-time figure, so a job advertised on a spine point will pay noticeably less in practice. How term-time-only pay is calculated walks through the standard method.

Council staff get at least 23 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays and two extra days, rising to 26 days after five years, and join the Local Government Pension Scheme. On pay between £18,401 and £29,000, the 2026/27 main section contribution is 5.8 per cent; there is also a 50/50 option that halves both the contribution and the pension built up.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, based in Sheffield, recruits separately for transport, skills and economic development work.

Police, fire and ambulance

South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue cover Sheffield along with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham. Police constables start at £32,255 (PP1, from 1 September 2026). Firefighters are paid £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. Both services also employ civilian staff in control rooms, IT, HR and fleet, on locally set pay.
