Public sector jobs in Chester
Chester’s public sector jobs come mostly from three employers: Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Cheshire and Wirral mental health trust, which is based in the city. Schools, the ambulance service and Cheshire’s police and fire services add more. The Welsh border is only a couple of miles away, so a second set of employers in Wrexham and Flintshire is within easy reach.
Cheshire West and Chester Council
The council has been a unitary authority since 2009, when it replaced Cheshire County Council in the west of the county and the district councils for Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston, and Vale Royal. It covers Chester, Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Winsford and a large rural area. Social care, education, highways, housing, planning, waste and public health all come under the one employer. That gives a wide range of jobs, and a council post can be based in any of those towns.
Pay is on the NJC spine, starting at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026, and staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme.
Hospital and health jobs
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs the city’s acute hospital on the Countess of Chester Health Park, north of the centre. Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which provides mental health, learning disability and some community services across west Cheshire and Wirral, has its headquarters on the same site. North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 and 111 calls.
All three pay Agenda for Change rates for England: band 2 at £25,272, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 7 from £49,387 to £56,515 from 1 April 2026. Staff join the NHS Pension Scheme, where the contribution rate depends on pensionable pay.
| Pensionable pay (2026/27) | Member contribution |
|---|---|
| Up to £13,259 | 5.2% |
| £13,260 to £28,854 | 6.5% |
| £28,855 to £35,155 | 8.3% |
| £35,156 to £52,778 | 9.8% |
| £52,779 to £67,668 | 10.7% |
A band 5 nurse at the entry point (£32,073) pays 8.3 per cent, which comes off before income tax is worked out. The take-home pay calculator shows the effect on monthly pay.
Police and fire
Cheshire Constabulary covers the city from its headquarters at Winsford, in the middle of the county. Officers appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service pays national rates from 1 July 2026: £31,539 for firefighters in development, £40,358 once competent, and £45,711 to £50,034 for watch managers.
Schools
Chester has council-maintained schools and academies, and the council is the local authority for the maintained ones. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the accepted award, backdated in maintained schools once the 2026 pay document is in force. Teaching assistants and other support staff are on the NJC spine and usually paid term-time only.
Jobs over the Welsh border
Wrexham and Deeside are a short drive west. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board runs Wrexham Maelor Hospital and the other NHS services in north Wales, and Wrexham and Flintshire councils recruit for the usual council roles. Some of these posts ask for Welsh language skills, at levels that range from a courtesy greeting to fluency; Welsh language skills in public sector jobs explains how adverts describe them.
Pay in Wales is set separately. NHS Wales staff get their own 2026/27 award, reported as 3.3 per cent, and the 2026/27 teachers’ award in Wales was still out for consultation in autumn 2026. Teachers in Wales also work under their own pay document.
Income tax depends on where you live. If your home is in Wales you pay Welsh rates and your code starts with C, but for 2026/27 those rates give the same totals as England. Welsh C tax codes covers the details, and public sector jobs in Wales the other differences.
Liverpool is under an hour away by train, with several large hospital trusts and councils; public sector jobs in Liverpool covers them.
