Public sector jobs in Coventry
Coventry City Council and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust are the two biggest public sector recruiters in the city, and between them they account for most vacancies in social care, health and local services. Pay follows national scales with no local weighting. In 2026/27 council jobs start at £25,614 (SCP 3) and NHS jobs at £25,272 (band 2).
Social care and social work
Coventry City Council is the metropolitan council for the city and is responsible for adult social care and children’s services, which are among the largest teams it employs. Roles include qualified social workers, social work assistants, family support workers, occupational therapists, reablement staff and the business support teams behind them.
Children’s social work is one of the hardest areas to recruit for across England, and Coventry, like many councils, advertises for it regularly. Qualified social workers are paid on council grades built from the NJC pay spine, which rose by 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026. No single national social worker scale exists, so the salary depends on the council’s own grading, and social worker pay explains how the grades usually work. Some councils add a market supplement for hard-to-fill teams.
If you are not yet qualified, fast-track routes into social work covers the salaried and bursary-funded programmes, and the children’s social worker profile describes the job day to day.
Private and voluntary providers paid by the council deliver most home care in the city, as elsewhere, and those jobs are not on public sector terms. The home care worker guide explains the difference.
Hospitals and community health
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust runs University Hospital at Walsgrave, the main acute hospital, and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby. Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust provides mental health, learning disability and community services. West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 calls.
| Band | 2026/27 pay | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | £25,272 | Healthcare support worker, domestic |
| 3 | £25,760 to £27,476 | Senior healthcare support worker, ward clerk |
| 4 | £28,392 to £31,157 | Assistant practitioner, team administrator |
| 5 | £32,073 to £39,043 | Staff nurse, occupational therapist |
| 6 | £39,959 to £48,117 | Senior nurse, specialist therapist |
Ward and clinic staff at the trust work shifts, and many posts are advertised as full time over a seven-day rota. Healthcare support workers usually start at band 2 or 3, and the trust, like most acute trusts, runs apprenticeships for support workers who want to train as nursing associates or registered nurses. Registered nurses and allied health professionals start at band 5. Night, weekend and bank holiday hours carry unsocial hours enhancements on top of the figures above.
Police and fire
West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service cover Coventry as part of the metropolitan county. A new constable starts at £32,255 from 1 September 2026, and a firefighter in development at £31,539 from 1 July 2026, rising to £40,358 once competent. The West Midlands Combined Authority recruits for regional transport and skills work.
Schools
Coventry’s schools include council-maintained schools and academy trusts. Teacher pay from 1 September 2026 starts at £34,069 (M1) and reaches £46,940 (M6) outside London, under the award the government accepted in July 2026. Maintained schools pay it once the 2026 pay and conditions document is in force, backdated. Support staff are paid on the NJC spine, usually term-time only.
Checks before you start
Almost every job in social care, health or schools needs an enhanced DBS check. From 5 October 2026 an enhanced check costs £41, down from £49.50, and the Update Service costs £15 a year. Employers often pay for the check, but not always, so ask. Social workers must also be registered with Social Work England before they can practise under that title.
Council and social care vacancies are on Coventry City Council’s own jobs site, NHS roles on NHS Jobs, and school jobs on Teaching Vacancies. Warwickshire County Council and the district councils around the city advertise separately, so if you live on the edge of Coventry it is worth checking their sites too. Council staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme, and on pay between £29,001 and £47,300 the 2026/27 main section contribution is 6.5 per cent.
Common questions
Is a care job in Coventry a public sector job?
Sometimes. The council employs some care and reablement staff directly, but most home care and residential care in England is provided by private and voluntary companies that the council pays. Those employers set their own pay and pension terms, so check who the employer is on the advert.
