Public sector jobs in Darlington

Darlington has more Civil Service policy work than most towns its size. The Darlington Economic Campus brings HM Treasury and several other government departments and bodies together in the town, so jobs that used to be almost entirely in London are advertised with Darlington as the base. The town also has the usual public employers: Darlington Memorial Hospital, Darlington Borough Council, schools, Durham Constabulary and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

The Darlington Economic Campus

The campus is a shared government hub. HM Treasury is the best-known department there, and other departments and public bodies have teams there working on economic, business, trade and local growth policy, as well as analysis, finance and corporate functions. Many roles are at executive officer level and above, including higher and senior executive officer, Grade 7 and Grade 6 posts.

All of these jobs are advertised on Civil Service Jobs. Each department sets its own pay range per grade, so an HEO in one department can be paid differently from an HEO in the next office along. The pay remit guidance for 2026/27 let departments raise their total pay bill by up to 3.5 per cent, which does not tell you what any one person will get. Civil Service grades and pay explains the grade structure.

Applications are assessed through Success Profiles, which can test behaviours, strengths, ability, experience and technical skills. Policy roles often ask for a personal statement and behaviour examples, followed by an interview. How to get into the Civil Service walks through the stages.

Civil servants join the alpha pension scheme. Member contributions for 2026/27 depend on pay: 4.6 per cent up to £36,199, 5.45 per cent from £36,200 to £56,000 and 7.35 per cent from £56,001 to £150,000. The Civil Service pension (alpha) explains what you build up in return.

Hospital and health

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust runs Darlington Memorial Hospital, which has an emergency department, alongside University Hospital of North Durham and community services across the county. Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, the mental health and learning disability trust for the area, runs West Park Hospital in Darlington. The North East Ambulance Service covers 999 calls.

Agenda for Change pay for England rose 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026. Healthcare support workers on band 3 earn £25,760 to £27,476, newly qualified nurses on band 5 start at £32,073, and band 7 runs from £49,387 to £56,515. Both trusts advertise on NHS Jobs or Trac.

Darlington Borough Council and schools

Darlington Borough Council is a unitary authority and one of the five boroughs in the Tees Valley Combined Authority area. It runs social care, education support, housing, highways, waste and leisure, and advertises on its own website. Pay is on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026, and staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Teachers in Darlington schools are paid on the national scale, from £34,069 at M1 to £46,940 at M6 outside London, from 1 September 2026, once the 2026 pay and conditions document is in force. Academy trusts set their own pay policies, though most follow the national figures. Support staff are usually term-time only on the NJC spine.

Common questions

Do I need to live in Darlington to apply for a Treasury job there?

No, but the advert names the office you will be attached to and sets out how many days a week you are expected to attend. Check that before you apply, because your base location is written into your contract.
