Public sector jobs in Ipswich

Suffolk is run from Ipswich. The county council’s headquarters, Endeavour House, is in the town centre, the county police headquarters is just outside at Martlesham Heath, and Ipswich Hospital is the main acute hospital for east Suffolk. Ipswich Borough Council and the town’s schools add more jobs, and the Port of Felixstowe, a short drive east, brings Border Force and other Home Office roles within reach.

Suffolk County Council and the borough council

Suffolk has two tiers of local government. Suffolk County Council runs adult and children’s social care, education services, highways, libraries and public health, and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is part of the county council too. Ipswich Borough Council is the district council for the town, responsible for council housing, planning, environmental health, waste, parks and council tax. How councils are organised explains which tier does what.

Both pay on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026, and staff at both join the Local Government Pension Scheme. The national Green Book gives full-time staff at least 23 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after five years. Firefighters at the county fire service are on their own national scale: £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.

Ipswich Hospital

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust runs Ipswich Hospital and Colchester Hospital, so some roles move between the two and the advert names the base. Mental health services are provided by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, and 999 calls are covered by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

All pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026. Band 2 is £25,272, band 4 runs from £28,392 to £31,157, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 7 from £49,387 to £56,515. Ipswich is outside the London and fringe areas, so there is no high cost area supplement.

Suffolk Constabulary

Suffolk Constabulary has its headquarters at Martlesham Heath, on the eastern edge of Ipswich. It recruits police officers, PCSOs, detectives and police staff in control rooms, custody, investigations, IT and support functions. A constable appointed now starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reaches £52,015 at the top of the scale. PCSO and police staff pay is set by the force, and the 2026/27 police staff award had not been settled in autumn 2026, so check the current rate on the advert.

Border Force and the Port of Felixstowe

Felixstowe is the UK’s busiest container port, and Border Force, part of the Home Office, staffs it with officers who check freight and documents. Border Force officers are civil servants, so posts are advertised on Civil Service Jobs and paid on Home Office grades. Border Force officer explains the job and the selection process.

There is no single national pay scale for civil servants. Each department sets its own ranges for each grade, and for 2026/27 the Cabinet Office capped each department’s headline paybill increase at 3.5 per cent. That is a limit on the total pay bill and does not set what any one person receives. Civil Service grades and pay explains the grades. Civil servants join the alpha pension scheme.

Pay (2026/27) Alpha member contribution
£0 to £36,199 4.6%
£36,200 to £56,000 5.45%
£56,001 to £150,000 7.35%

Schools

Ipswich has maintained schools and academies, and Suffolk County Council is the local authority for the maintained ones. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the accepted award, rising to £46,940 at M6, with maintained schools paying the new rates once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are on the NJC spine and usually work term-time only. Vacancies appear on Teaching Vacancies and the county’s own jobs site.

Further afield

Colchester is a short train ride south and has its own hospital, council offices and Army garrison. Norwich is about 40 minutes to the north by train, with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Norfolk County Council; public sector jobs in Norwich covers that market. Direct trains also run to London Liverpool Street for anyone weighing London weighting against a long commute.
