Public sector jobs in Maidstone

Maidstone has more public sector work than its size suggests because it is Kent’s county town. Kent County Council is run from County Hall in the town centre, Kent Police has its headquarters on Sutton Road, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service is also based in Maidstone. Add Maidstone Hospital, the borough council, a prison and a large number of schools, and most kinds of public sector job turn up here at some point.

County Hall and the borough council

Kent has two tiers of local government. Kent County Council covers the whole county apart from Medway, which is a separate unitary council, and runs adult social care, children’s services, education services, highways, libraries, public health and trading standards. Many of its office-based, specialist and senior jobs are at County Hall. Maidstone Borough Council is the district council for the town and surrounding villages, handling housing, planning, environmental health, waste collection, parks and council tax. If you are not sure which council does what, how councils are organised sets it out.

Kent is one of the two-tier areas where the government has asked councils to put forward plans for unitary councils, so the structure could change over the next few years. For now, both councils recruit separately and advertise on their own websites.

Both councils use the NJC pay spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026 and goes up to £56,293 at SCP 43. Each council fits its own grades onto that spine, so compare the salary range on the advert, not the grade name. The national Green Book minimum is 23 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme: on a salary between £29,001 and £47,300 you pay 6.5 per cent in the main section in 2026/27.

Maidstone Hospital and NHS work in Kent

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust runs Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, so some posts expect you to work across both sites. Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust employs district nurses, therapists and community teams across the county, and South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust handles 999 calls and ambulance crews.

All of them pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026.

Band Pay from 1 April 2026 Typical roles
2 £25,272 Healthcare assistant, domestic, porter
3 £25,760 to £27,476 Senior healthcare assistant, ward clerk
5 £32,073 to £39,043 Newly qualified nurse, physiotherapist
6 £39,959 to £48,117 Senior nurse, specialist practitioner

Some NHS employers nearer London pay a high cost area supplement on top, so check the advert for any extra payment before comparing jobs in different parts of Kent.

Police and fire headquarters

Kent Police recruits constables, detectives and PCSOs, plus a large staff of call handlers, analysts, investigators and IT and HR workers, many of them at the Maidstone headquarters. A constable appointed now starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and moves up to £52,015 at the top of the scale. Police pay scales has the steps in between.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service pays national rates, which from 1 July 2026 are £31,539 for firefighters in development and £40,358 once competent. Watch managers earn £45,711 to £50,034. Many stations in rural Kent rely on on-call crews who fit the role around another job.

HMP Maidstone

HMP Maidstone is a men’s prison close to the town centre. HM Prison and Probation Service recruits prison officers and operational support grades for it through its own recruitment site, and the job involves a fitness test, a role-play assessment and security vetting. Pay is set nationally for the prison service and is published on each advert. How to become a prison officer covers the selection process.

Schools and the Kent Test

Kent kept selective education, and Maidstone has several grammar schools that admit pupils through the Kent Test, alongside non-selective secondaries, academies and maintained primaries. Kent County Council is the local authority for maintained schools. Academy trusts advertise on their own sites and on the free Teaching Vacancies service.

Teachers outside London and the fringe start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, rising to £46,940 at M6. Maintained schools pay the new rates, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Teaching assistants and other support staff are paid on the NJC spine, usually term-time only, which means an annual salary well below the full-time figure on the advert. How term-time-only pay is calculated shows how the reduction is worked out.

Many Maidstone residents commute to Medway, Tunbridge Wells or London for work. If you are weighing a London job against a local one, run both salaries through the take-home pay calculator and set the difference against the cost of the season ticket.
