Public sector jobs in Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle has far more Civil Service jobs than most English cities. Large Department for Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs offices at Longbenton, on the North Tyneside side of the city boundary, employ big numbers of staff in processing, customer service, digital and operational roles. The other big employers are the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle City Council and the Northumbria-wide police, fire and ambulance services.
Civil Service jobs
Newcastle’s civil servants work mostly in large operational centres handling pensions, benefits and tax administration, along with the digital teams that build and run those services. Entry grades are administrative assistant and administrative officer, with executive officer as the first supervisory or caseworking grade. The administrative officer and DWP work coach profiles describe two of the most common starting points.
Each department sets its own pay, so there is no national Civil Service pay scale. For 2026/27 the pay remit guidance capped departments’ overall pay bill increase at 3.5 per cent, with a voluntary framework aimed at pay compression between the AA and EO grades. Your own rise depends on your department’s pay deal. Civil Service grades and pay explains the ladder from AA to Senior Civil Service.
Applications are assessed through Success Profiles, which combine behaviours, strengths, ability, experience and technical skills. Many entry-level roles start with an online test, and practising beforehand helps (Civil Service online tests).
Civil servants join the alpha pension scheme. Member contributions in 2026/27 are 4.6 per cent on pay up to £36,199 and 5.45 per cent from £36,200 to £56,000.
Hospitals and health
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary, the Freeman Hospital and community services in the city. Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and learning disability services across the region. North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust handles 999 and 111 calls across the North East.
NHS pay is the England Agenda for Change scale from 1 April 2026:
| Band | Pay range | Common roles |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | £25,272 | Domestic, porter, healthcare support worker |
| 4 | £28,392 to £31,157 | Medical secretary, assistant practitioner |
| 5 | £32,073 to £39,043 | Staff nurse, paramedic (newly qualified) |
| 7 | £49,387 to £56,515 | Specialist or advanced practitioner, team manager |
Newcastle City Council
Newcastle City Council is the metropolitan council for the city. It recruits for social work, housing, environmental health, highways, parks, libraries, bins and street cleaning, and it employs support staff in maintained schools. Pay is on the NJC spine, which rose 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026, and the bottom point, SCP 3, is £25,614. Gateshead and North Tyneside councils, just across the river and the boundary, advertise their own jobs.
The North East Combined Authority, with an elected mayor, covers Newcastle and the surrounding councils and recruits for transport, skills and investment roles.
Police and fire
Northumbria Police covers Newcastle and the wider area from the Scottish border down to Sunderland. New constables start at £32,255 (PP1) under the scale from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015 at PP7. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service pays firefighters £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. Both services also employ civilian staff in control rooms, custody, IT and administration, on locally set pay.
Schools
Teaching posts follow the England scales. M1 is £34,069 from 1 September 2026, and maintained schools apply it once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are on the NJC spine, usually term-time only. School jobs are listed on Teaching Vacancies and on academy trust websites.
A Civil Service post at Longbenton and a council or NHS job on similar pay differ in leave and pension as well as salary. NHS staff start on 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, council staff on at least 23 days plus bank holidays and two extra days, and each Civil Service department sets its own leave.
