Public sector jobs in Perth

Perth and Kinross Council is the largest public employer based in Perth, followed by NHS Tayside, which runs Perth Royal Infirmary. Most other public jobs are with the Scottish Prison Service, schools, Perth College UHI and the national police, fire and ambulance services. Dundee, with Ninewells Hospital and Social Security Scotland, is close enough that many Perth residents work there.

Perth and Kinross Council

The council is a unitary authority covering Perth, Kinross, Crieff, Pitlochry, Blairgowrie, Aberfeldy and a large rural area of Highland Perthshire. It runs schools, children’s and adult social work, housing, roads, waste, planning and environmental health. Vacancies are listed on myjobscotland.

Scottish local government pay is negotiated separately from the English NJC system, so the spine points you may know from England do not apply. The advert gives the grade and annual salary, usually with an hourly rate for part-time posts. Council staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme in Scotland, which has its own contribution bands, different from the England and Wales rates.

Health and social care for adults is planned through the Perth and Kinross health and social care partnership, which brings council and NHS Tayside staff together. Care at home, community nursing and social work teams often share bases, but each person stays employed by either the council or the health board, on that employer’s terms.

Teachers in Perth and Kinross schools are paid on the SNCT scale. From 1 August 2026 a probationer earns £36,159, the main grade runs from £43,383 to £54,453, and a principal teacher earns £59,367 to £76,617. Teacher pay in Scotland covers the rest of the scale.

NHS Tayside in Perth

Perth Royal Infirmary is NHS Tayside’s hospital in the city. Many specialist and acute services are concentrated at Ninewells in Dundee, so some posts advertised with Perth in the title involve working across both sites. NHS Tayside also employs district nurses, health visitors and community mental health staff across Perth and Kinross, and these posts often need a driving licence.

Agenda for Change pay in Scotland went up 3.75 per cent from 1 April 2026. A healthcare support worker on band 3 earns £29,061 to £31,364, and a newly registered nurse on band 5 starts at £34,494. If average CPI for 2026 is above 2.75 per cent, an extra payment will be made in March 2027.

Prison, college and other employers

HMP Perth is one of the Scottish Prison Service’s establishments. SPS recruits prison officers and operations staff in its own campaigns, with pay set by SPS, which is separate from HM Prison and Probation Service in England and Wales.

Perth College UHI, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, employs lecturers and support staff on its own scales. Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have stations in Perth, and firefighters are paid the UK-wide NJC rates of £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. The Scottish Ambulance Service covers 999 calls.

Scottish income tax on a Perth salary

If you move to Perth from England, your take-home pay changes because of Scottish income tax. The 2026/27 bands, assuming the standard £12,570 personal allowance, are:

Band Gross income Rate
Starter £12,571 to £16,537 19%
Basic £16,538 to £29,526 20%
Intermediate £29,527 to £43,662 21%
Higher £43,663 to £75,000 42%
Advanced £75,001 to £125,140 45%
Top over £125,140 48%

National Insurance is the same as in the rest of the UK. Your tax code will start with S. Say you earn £31,000 as a band 3 healthcare support worker: the slice from £29,527 to £31,000 is taxed at 21 per cent, one point more than in England. Scottish S tax codes and rates explains the codes, and the take-home pay calculator works out the monthly figure.

Checks before you start

Disclosure Scotland handles criminal record checks. Teaching, care and most NHS clinical jobs need PVG scheme membership, which costs £59 to join and £18 to renew, and is free for volunteers. From 1 April 2026 membership lasts five years. Basic and standard or enhanced disclosures cost £25 each.
