Public sector jobs in Salford

The largest public sector employer in Salford is the NHS, through Salford Royal Hospital. Salford City Council, the schools and the Greater Manchester police, fire and ambulance services account for most of the rest. Because Salford sits right next to Manchester city centre, people who live here can reach jobs across the conurbation, and plenty of Salford’s own staff travel in from elsewhere.

Salford Royal and the Northern Care Alliance

Salford Royal is run by the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which also runs hospitals in Oldham, Bury and Rochdale. Salford Royal has the Greater Manchester neurosciences centre, so alongside general ward, theatre and outpatient work the trust recruits for neurology, neurosurgery, stroke and specialist rehabilitation. Adverts name the site, but some posts are trust-wide.

Mental health services are provided by Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 and 111. All pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026: band 2 is £25,272, band 4 runs from £28,392 to £31,157, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 7 from £49,387 to £56,515. Full-time staff start with 27 days’ annual leave plus 8 public holidays, going up to 29 days after 5 years of NHS service and 33 after 10.

The NHS Pension Scheme takes a share of your whole pensionable pay, set by tier. On £28,855 to £35,155 the member rate is 8.3 per cent, and on £35,156 to £52,778 it is 9.8 per cent. A newly qualified nurse at the bottom of band 5 falls in the 8.3 per cent tier, which is one reason take-home pay looks lower than people expect. The take-home pay calculator shows the effect.

Salford City Council

Salford is a metropolitan borough with a single tier of local government, so the city council handles everything from adult and children’s social care to bin collections, housing, planning and libraries. Its main offices are at the civic centre in Swinton. Social work, education and care jobs make up a large share of what it advertises.

The council pays on the NJC spine, from £25,614 at SCP 3 from 1 April 2026 to £56,293 at SCP 43, with its own grades mapped onto it. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. The Green Book minimum leave is 23 days plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years. How to get a council job explains how council recruitment differs from NHS and Civil Service applications.

Greater Manchester services

Salford is one of the ten boroughs of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and the elected mayor of Greater Manchester is responsible for policing and fire across the area. Greater Manchester Police recruits officers and police staff for the whole force, so applications go to the force as a whole. A constable appointed now starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service pays the national firefighter rates. From 1 July 2026 that is £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, which works out at £18.43 an hour. Crew managers earn £42,892 to £44,742. The combined authority also recruits its own staff for transport, housing, skills and policy work.

MediaCityUK and the university

The BBC has a large base at MediaCityUK on Salford Quays. It is a public corporation and recruits through its own careers site on its own pay structure, which does not follow any of the national public sector scales. The University of Salford also has a campus there as well as its main site near the city centre. Universities set their own pay and pension arrangements, so read each advert carefully.

Schools

Salford City Council is the local authority for maintained schools, and a growing number of secondaries and some primaries belong to academy trusts. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the accepted award, with maintained schools paying the backdated rates once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are on the NJC spine and are often paid term-time only.

Manchester city centre is a short tram or bus ride away and has a much larger public sector of its own. Public sector jobs in Manchester covers them.
