Public sector jobs in Southampton
Southampton’s public sector work has a maritime side most cities lack. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has its headquarters in the city, and Border Force works at the port. Most vacancies, though, come from the usual large employers: University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, Southampton City Council, the schools and the Hampshire-wide police, fire and ambulance services. Pay follows national scales with no local weighting.
Health: the biggest recruiter
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust runs Southampton General Hospital, the Princess Anne maternity hospital and other sites. It is a regional centre for specialist services, including major trauma and children’s care, so it recruits across a wide range of clinical specialties. Mental health and community services in the city are run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 calls.
Agenda for Change rates from 1 April 2026:
| Band | Entry | Top |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | £25,272 | £25,272 |
| 3 | £25,760 | £27,476 |
| 5 | £32,073 | £39,043 |
| 6 | £39,959 | £48,117 |
| 7 | £49,387 | £56,515 |
Much hospital work runs around the clock. Hours worked at night, at weekends and on bank holidays attract unsocial hours enhancements on top of basic pay, which can make a real difference to monthly income for ward staff. NHS unsocial hours enhancements explains the rates by band, and NHS shift patterns covers what rotas look like.
Maritime and border jobs
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, an executive agency of the Department for Transport, recruits for policy, survey and inspection, operations and corporate roles at its Southampton headquarters. HM Coastguard operations roles are based at coordination centres around the coast. Both are advertised on Civil Service Jobs. The HM Coastguard profile covers the operational side.
Border Force staff work at the port checking passengers and freight. Jobs are with the Home Office, on Civil Service Jobs, and often involve shifts and security clearance (Border Force officer). Civil Service pay is set by each department; for 2026/27 departments could increase their pay bill by up to 3.5 per cent in total.
Southampton City Council
Southampton City Council is a unitary authority, so it is responsible for adult social care, children’s services, housing, waste, highways, parks and libraries within the city. Hampshire County Council, based in Winchester, covers the surrounding areas such as Eastleigh and the New Forest. Both pay on the NJC spine, which rose by 3.3 per cent from 1 April 2026: SCP 3 is £25,614, SCP 15 is £31,015 and SCP 25 is £37,563.
Police, fire and schools
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary covers Southampton. A new constable starts at £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015 at PP7. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service pays firefighters £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
Teachers start at £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, under the award the government accepted; maintained schools apply it once the 2026 pay document is in force. School support staff are on the NJC spine, usually term-time only.
Leave and pension by employer
Terms differ more than the salary figures suggest. NHS staff start on 27 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, rising to 29 after five years and 33 after ten years of NHS service. Council staff get at least 23 days plus bank holidays and two extra days, rising to 26 days after five years. Civil Service leave is set by each department and agency.
Pension contributions also vary. On a hypothetical salary of £32,000, a member pays 8.3 per cent into the NHS Pension Scheme, 6.5 per cent into the main section of the Local Government Pension Scheme and 4.6 per cent into the Civil Service alpha scheme in 2026/27. The benefits each scheme builds up are different, so the contribution rate alone does not tell you which is better value.
Where to apply

Common questions
Are Southampton NHS jobs paid the London fringe supplement?
No. Southampton is outside the NHS high cost area zones, so Agenda for Change jobs in the city are paid at the standard England rates. Some trusts pay recruitment and retention premiums for specific hard-to-fill posts, which the advert would state.
