Public sector jobs in Warrington
The main public sector employers in Warrington are Warrington Borough Council and Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Cheshire’s police and fire services, a prison at Risley, community health providers and the schools cover the rest. Warrington sits halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, so it is also a common base for people working in either city.
Warrington Borough Council
Warrington has been a unitary authority since 1998, which means one council runs all local services: adult social care, children’s services, education, housing, highways, planning, waste and libraries. Social workers, family support workers, occupational therapists and care staff make up a steady share of its vacancies, along with planners, engineers and office roles.
Pay is on the NJC spine. From 1 April 2026 that runs from £25,614 at SCP 3 to £56,293 at SCP 43, and the council’s grades sit on top of it. Qualified social workers are usually graded in the middle part of the spine, and social worker pay shows how that tends to work across councils.
Council staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. For 2026/27 the main section rates are 5.5 per cent on pay up to £18,400, 5.8 per cent on £18,401 to £29,000, 6.5 per cent on £29,001 to £47,300 and 6.8 per cent on £47,301 to £59,800. Leave under the Green Book is at least 23 days plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years.
Warrington Hospital and the NHS
Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Warrington Hospital and Halton Hospital in Runcorn. Warrington is the main acute site, with the emergency department and most inpatient wards. Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services in Warrington, and community nursing and therapy are run by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls.
All of these pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026.
| Band | Pay | Roles you often see |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | £25,272 | Healthcare assistant, catering assistant |
| 3 | £25,760 to £27,476 | Senior HCA, receptionist |
| 4 | £28,392 to £31,157 | Assistant practitioner, team administrator |
| 5 | £32,073 to £39,043 | Staff nurse, dietitian |
Healthcare assistant jobs are the most common way into hospital work without a professional qualification, and healthcare assistant (HCA) jobs in the NHS explains what trusts look for. Full-time staff start with 27 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays, going up after 5 and 10 years of NHS service.
Police, fire and HMP Risley
Warrington is policed by Cheshire Constabulary and covered by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. Constables appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026, crew managers £42,892 to £44,742 and watch managers £45,711 to £50,034.
HMP Risley is a men’s prison on the north-east side of Warrington. HM Prison and Probation Service recruits prison officers and support staff for it through its own recruitment site, with national pay shown on each advert.
Schools
Warrington Borough Council is the local authority for maintained schools, and a number of the town’s schools are academies. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 and reach £46,940 at M6. Maintained schools apply the new rates, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Teaching assistants and other support staff are on the NJC spine and often paid term-time only, so the annual figure you actually receive is lower than the full-time salary quoted.
Commuting from Warrington
Warrington Bank Quay is on the West Coast Main Line and Warrington Central is on the line between Liverpool and Manchester, so both cities are within easy reach. Each has several large hospital trusts, a city council and Civil Service offices. Pay on national scales is the same wherever you work in the North West, so commuting time and costs usually decide it. Public sector jobs in Liverpool and public sector jobs in Manchester cover the bigger markets.
