Tax and take-home pay

Civil Service Executive Officer take-home pay

An executive officer on £33,000 takes home about £2,172 a month in 2026/27 if they pay 4.6% into the alpha pension and have no student loan, or about £2,145 with a Plan 2 loan. There is no national EO salary, so the figures below use four example salaries, chosen to show what happens either side of the alpha pension break at £36,200. They are not published EO rates.

Why this page uses example salaries

Each department sets pay for grades below the Senior Civil Service. The pay remit guidance published on 21 May 2026 caps the 2026/27 increase in each department’s paybill at 3.5%, and it says that does not confirm what an individual will receive. The advert and your offer letter give your real salary. The Executive officer profile explains the grade, and Civil Service grades and pay covers how departments differ.

Take-home pay at four example salaries

These assume a 1257L tax code, England, full-time hours and membership of alpha. The pension rate is applied to the whole salary, and contributions come off before Income Tax. The scheme’s page does not say how the bands are applied or when the relief is given, so check your payslip.

Salary Alpha rate Pension a year Monthly take-home, no loan Plan 2 loan
£30,000 4.6% £1,380.00 £2,001.30 £1,996.69
£33,000 4.6% £1,518.00 £2,172.10 £2,144.99
£36,000 4.6% £1,656.00 £2,342.90 £2,293.29
£38,000 5.45% £2,071.00 £2,435.23 £2,370.62

The alpha rates for 2026/27 are 4.6% on pensionable earnings up to £36,199 and 5.45% from £36,200 to £56,000. Higher bands apply above that. At £30,000 a Plan 2 loan takes only about £4.61 a month, because the threshold is £29,385.

One year at £33,000

For a £33,000 EO with no student loan, the year breaks down as follows:

  • alpha pension at 4.6%: £1,518.00
  • Income Tax at 20% on £33,000 less the pension less £12,570: £3,782.40
  • National Insurance at 8% on pay above £12,570: £1,634.40

That leaves £26,065.20, or £2,172.10 a month. Student loan, if you have one, is taken on top. Plan 2 takes £325.35 a year at this salary, and Plan 5, which starts at £25,000, takes £720.00.

Student loan plans at each salary

The deduction depends on which plan you are on, and the three plans differ a lot at EO pay. Annual repayments at the four example salaries are:

Salary Plan 1 Plan 2 Plan 5
£30,000 £279.00 £55.35 £450.00
£33,000 £549.00 £325.35 £720.00
£36,000 £819.00 £595.35 £990.00
£38,000 £999.00 £775.35 £1,170.00

Each is 9% of pay above the plan’s threshold: £26,900, £29,385 and £25,000. Student loan repayments from salary explains how to find your plan.

What the pension rate costs against the NHS

The alpha rates are low next to the NHS Pension Scheme. A salary of £33,000 is in the NHS 8.3% tier, which costs £2,739 a year, against £1,518 in alpha. The take-home difference is about £81 a month in favour of the alpha member (£2,172.10 against £2,090.70). The two schemes build different pensions, so compare what each pays out as well as what it costs. The alpha pension guide explains how alpha builds up, and pension tax relief shows why the contribution reduces your tax.

What happens across £36,200

An EO whose pay moves from £36,000 to £38,000 gains £166.67 a month gross, but moves into the 5.45% rate. If the rate applies to the whole salary, take-home pay rises by £92.33 a month, about 55 per cent of the gross rise. The pension itself rises by £415 a year, and tax and National Insurance take most of the remainder.

Pay can cross a pension band without a promotion, for instance when a departmental award lifts a salary over £36,199, or when an allowance counts as pensionable. Your payslip will show the new rate in the first month it applies.

Allowances, London and Scotland

London weighting and any pay allowances for hard-to-fill roles are not in these figures. If they count as pensionable earnings they can move you to a different pension band. EOs who live in Scotland pay Scottish rates of Income Tax, with a 21% rate between £29,527 and £43,662, and the same National Insurance. The take-home pay calculator can model your own salary and allowances.

Common questions

Where do I find my exact EO salary?

On the job advert on Civil Service Jobs and in your offer letter. Departments set their own EO ranges, and many advertise separate national and London figures, so the pay can differ by department and location.
