NHS bands 8b, 8c and 8d

Bands 8b, 8c and 8d are the senior management and clinical leadership levels of Agenda for Change. In England from 1 April 2026, 8b runs from £66,582 to £77,368, 8c from £79,504 to £91,609 and 8d from £94,356 to £108,814. Each has three points, with two years at entry and three at the middle step before the top.

The 2026/27 rates

Band Entry After 2 years After 5 years Scotland range
8b £66,582 £70,896 £77,368 £76,778 to £82,133
8c £79,504 £84,346 £91,609 £90,678 to £97,199
8d £94,356 £100,140 £108,814 £107,655 to £112,264

The England figures include the 3.3% consolidated award from 1 April 2026. Scotland’s values come from its own two-year deal, which gives 3.75% for 2026/27, and they are noticeably higher at these levels: an 8b post in Scotland starts at £76,778, close to the top of the English 8b scale.

London supplements at these bands are always at their cap: £8,746 a year in Inner London, £6,137 in Outer London and £2,270 in the fringe. The high cost area supplement guide explains why.

What separates the three bands

Job evaluation sets the banding, and at this level the differences come down to scale of responsibility: the size of the budget, how many staff report into you, and how far your decisions reach across the organisation.

Band 8b commonly covers heads of a single service or department, senior matrons, consultant allied health professionals and consultant clinical scientists, and principal or consultant clinical psychologists in some trusts. You might lead several teams through band 7 and 8a managers.

Band 8c posts usually take in a group of services or a whole professional function: a head of nursing for a division, an associate director of finance or workforce, a consultant clinical psychologist leading a service, or a deputy chief pharmacist.

Band 8d is typically deputy director level, or the senior professional lead for a large trust: a deputy director of operations, director-level heads of corporate functions in smaller organisations, or a chief pharmacist in some trusts. Above 8d sits band 9, and above that the board, usually on separate contracts.

Entering these bands

People usually reach bands 8b to 8d by internal promotion or a move between trusts after time at 8a. Adverts ask for evidence of leading a service through change, managing significant budgets, and working with system partners such as the integrated care board. Clinical leadership posts often require a doctorate or consultant-level practice in the profession.

The bands do not overlap, so promotion takes you to the next band’s entry point. From the top of 8a (£64,750) to the 8b entry (£66,582) is a modest step, and the bigger increases come from the steps within each band.

Tax at this level

All points in these bands are well above the £50,270 higher rate threshold. Watch £100,000. Your Personal Allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000 and disappears at £125,140, which makes the effective rate on that slice much higher than 40%. In England the 8d middle and top points (£100,140 and £108,814) are over £100,000 on basic pay alone, and an 8c or 8d salary plus a London supplement can be too. Pension contributions usually reduce adjusted net income, which matters here. The £100,000 tax trap guide works through an example.

In Scotland the whole 8b to 8d range sits in the 45% advanced band (£75,001 to £125,140).

Contracts, notice and leave

Most 8b to 8d posts are permanent, but interim and fixed-term posts are common during restructures. Fixed-term staff must not be treated less favourably than comparable permanent staff, and after four years on successive fixed-term contracts an employee becomes permanent unless the employer can justify keeping the contract fixed.

Contractual notice periods at these bands are usually longer than for junior staff, so check yours before you resign, especially if a new employer wants you to start quickly. The statutory minimum the employer must give is one week per complete year of service, up to 12 weeks.

Annual leave follows the national Agenda for Change rules: 27 days on appointment, 29 after five years and 33 after ten years of NHS service, plus 8 public holidays.

Pension contributions

The NHS Pension Scheme rate is 10.7% at the 8b entry point and 12.5% at every other point in these bands, since 12.5% applies from £67,669. Pension growth at this level can exceed the annual allowance, particularly in a year when you are promoted. The annual allowance guide explains how the test works, and NHS Business Services Authority or a regulated financial adviser can help with individual decisions.

The take-home pay calculator gives net pay for any salary on these scales. Senior vacancies for nurses and other clinicians are listed on the nursing and midwifery and allied health boards, and management posts on the NHS admin board.

Common questions

Are 8b, 8c and 8d jobs ever on very senior manager contracts instead?

Executive directors and chief executives are usually employed outside Agenda for Change on very senior manager terms. Bands 8b to 8d cover the layer beneath them, and some trusts also use band 9 for posts just below board level.
