Public sector jobs in Blackpool
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Blackpool Council are the town’s main public sector employers, and both recruit all year round. In a town where much private sector work is seasonal and tied to tourism, their jobs come with national pay scales, year-round hours and public sector pensions. Schools, Lancashire’s police and fire services and the mental health trust add more.
Blackpool Victoria Hospital
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Blackpool Victoria Hospital and provides community health services across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Victoria is the acute hospital for the Fylde coast and houses the Lancashire Cardiac Centre, so the trust recruits for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery as well as general ward, emergency and theatre roles. The community side employs district nurses, health visitors, therapists and community teams who work across the three boroughs.
Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services, and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 and 111.

Blackpool Council
Blackpool Council is a unitary authority, so it runs everything locally: adult social care, children’s services, education, housing, planning, highways, waste, leisure and libraries. It also owns or runs several of the town’s leisure and visitor attractions through council-owned companies, which recruit on their own terms. In 2025 Blackpool joined Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen in a new Lancashire combined county authority, which works on transport, skills and economic development.
Council posts are on the NJC spine. From 1 April 2026 the lowest point, SCP 3, is £25,614, which is about £13.28 an hour for a 37-hour week, and SCP 43 is £56,293. Green Book leave is at least 23 days plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years, and staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme.
Care work
Adult social care is a large part of what the council pays for, but most care workers in Blackpool, as elsewhere, are employed by private and voluntary providers the council commissions. Their pay is not on the NJC spine and is often close to the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour for those aged 21 and over. Some providers pay the voluntary Real Living Wage, which is £14.10 an hour outside London from the 2026/27 rates announced on 15 October 2026. Accredited employers have up to six months to bring it in. The Real Living Wage vs the National Living Wage explains the difference, and home care worker jobs covers the work itself.
Police and fire
Lancashire Constabulary and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service both cover Blackpool, with their headquarters near Preston. Constables appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reach £52,015 at the top of the scale. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026, and watch managers £45,711 to £50,034. Both services also employ control room and support staff.
Schools
Blackpool Council is the local authority for maintained schools, and many of the town’s schools, including most secondaries, are academies. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, rising to £46,940 at M6 and £52,835 at the top of the upper pay range. Teacher pay scales in England lists every point. Teaching assistants and other support staff are on the NJC spine, usually paid term-time only.
Preston is about half an hour away by train and has the county council, a major trauma centre and the police and fire headquarters. Public sector jobs in Preston covers it.
