Public sector jobs in Canterbury
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is the biggest public employer around Canterbury, with the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in the city as one of its sites. Kent County Council, Canterbury City Council, the schools, Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service account for most other public jobs. The city also has two universities, which bring student placements, training routes and a large pool of part-time workers.
East Kent Hospitals
The trust runs the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, plus smaller sites in Dover and Folkestone. Services are spread between the three main hospitals, so the specialty you want to work in may be based in Ashford or Margate even if you live in Canterbury. Check the base in the advert and whether you would rotate between sites.
Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust runs district nursing, health visiting, community hospitals and therapy services across the county. Mental health services for Kent and Medway come from a separate county-wide trust, and South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 calls.
All of them pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026:
| Band | Pay range from 1 April 2026 | Typical roles |

Each trust bands its own jobs against the national job profiles, so the same title can sit a band apart between employers. NHS band 5 pay and jobs covers the most common entry point for registered professionals.
Kent County Council and Canterbury City Council
Kent is a two-tier county. Kent County Council, based in Maidstone, runs adult social care, children’s services, highways, libraries, public health and education services. Canterbury City Council covers the city, Whitstable, Herne Bay and the villages between, and is responsible for housing, planning, waste collection, parking and leisure. Both councils base their pay on the NJC spine, which runs from £25,614 at SCP 3 to £56,293 at SCP 43 from 1 April 2026, and both offer the Local Government Pension Scheme.
Kent is one of the two-tier areas in the government’s programme to move to unitary councils. Any new authorities would take on existing staff, so the current county and city council jobs are the route in for now. Public sector jobs in Maidstone covers the county council’s headquarters and the wider mid Kent area.
Schools, grammar schools and teacher training
Kent keeps a selective system, with grammar schools in and around Canterbury chosen through the Kent Test in year 6. Many of the other secondary schools are academies, and primaries are a mix of academies, maintained schools and church schools. Canterbury is outside the London fringe pay area, which in Kent only covers Dartford and Sevenoaks, so teachers here start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the rest of England range.
Canterbury Christ Church University trains teachers through undergraduate and postgraduate routes and works with partner schools across Kent, so schools in the area are used to hosting trainees. Bursaries for postgraduate trainees in England for 2026/27 include £29,000 for chemistry, computing, maths and physics and £20,000 for languages and design and technology. Teacher training routes compares the PGCE, School Direct, SCITT and apprenticeship options.
Health training and the medical school
Canterbury Christ Church also trains nurses, paramedics and allied health professionals, and Kent and Medway Medical School is run jointly by Christ Church and the University of Kent. Students spend placements with local NHS employers, which is often where they first hear about band 5 vacancies, but those jobs are still advertised on NHS Jobs and open to anyone who meets the person specification.
Police, fire and student-friendly work
Kent Police starts new constables on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015. Kent Fire and Rescue Service pays national rates of £31,539 for firefighters in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026.
With two universities in the city, a lot of public sector work in Canterbury is part-time or casual: hospital bank shifts, exam invigilation, library and leisure work, and election-day staffing for the councils. Public sector jobs for students lists the roles that fit around a timetable and how they are usually paid.
