Public sector jobs in Colchester
Colchester is a garrison city, and the Army is one of its biggest public sector employers alongside Colchester Hospital and the two councils. Few towns have that mix of soldiers and Ministry of Defence civilians alongside NHS and council staff on national scales. Schools, Essex Police and the ambulance and mental health trusts fill in the rest.
The garrison
Colchester Garrison is home to the Army’s 16 Air Assault Brigade, its rapid-response airborne formation, and a range of supporting units. The city also has the Military Corrective Training Centre, the armed forces’ detention centre for service personnel. Jobs here fall into two groups. Soldiers join through Army recruitment and are then posted to Colchester; you cannot apply for a Colchester posting directly. Civilian staff, in roles such as admin, finance, logistics, estates and welfare, are civil servants recruited by the Ministry of Defence through Civil Service Jobs, or work for contractors who run facilities on its behalf.
Armed forces pay rose by 3.6 per cent, backdated to 1 April 2026. New-entrant starting pay is reported as £27,282 for other ranks and £35,926 for junior officers, though these figures come from secondary reporting of the award. Armed forces pay explains how pay rises with rank and service, and joining the British Army as a soldier covers the application process. MOD civilian roles are paid on the department’s own grades; MOD civilian jobs describes them.
Colchester Hospital
East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust runs Colchester Hospital and Ipswich Hospital. It recruits for both sites, so check the advert for the base: some specialist services are on one site only, and a few roles split time between the two. Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services in the area, and the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls.
Pay is on Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026. Band 2 is £25,272, band 4 runs from £28,392 to £31,157, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. Colchester is too far from London for the high cost area supplement.
The city and county councils
Colchester became a city in 2022, and Colchester City Council is the district council. It handles housing, planning, environmental health, waste and recycling, parks and leisure, and council tax. Essex County Council, based in Chelmsford, runs the bigger services such as social care, education services, highways and libraries, and many of its frontline staff work from offices in Colchester.
Both councils use the NJC pay spine, from £25,614 at SCP 3 from 1 April 2026. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme, where the 2026/27 main-section rate is 5.5 per cent on pay up to £18,400 and 6.5 per cent on £29,001 to £47,300. Some councils also allow the 50/50 section, which halves both the contribution and the pension built up.
Schools
Colchester has two selective grammar schools, Colchester Royal Grammar School and Colchester County High School for Girls, as well as comprehensives, maintained primaries and academies. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, the rest-of-England rate, which maintained schools pay once the 2026 pay document is in force. School jobs are on Teaching Vacancies and trust websites. Any job in regulated activity with children needs an enhanced DBS check with a children’s barred list check, which costs £41 from 5 October 2026 and is arranged through the school. Schools ask for application forms and two references under safer recruitment rules, and a CV on its own is not usually accepted.
Police and fire
Essex Police covers Colchester, from its headquarters in Chelmsford. A new constable earns £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service pays firefighters £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
Commuting
Direct trains run to London Liverpool Street, and Chelmsford and Ipswich are both a short train ride away with their own county headquarters and hospitals. Public sector jobs in London covers the capital, where London weighting lifts pay in most sectors.
