Public sector jobs in Doncaster

Doncaster’s largest public sector employers are City of Doncaster Council, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the regional mental health trust, which has its headquarters in the city. Doncaster also has a cluster of prisons to the east, which makes HM Prison and Probation Service a bigger local employer than in most places. Schools and the Sheffield-based police and fire services account for much of the rest, and good rail links to Sheffield and Leeds widen the choice.

Doncaster Royal Infirmary and the NHS

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough. The Royal Infirmary is the largest site and takes most emergency work, so it recruits across wards, theatres, the emergency department and diagnostics. Bassetlaw is over the border in Nottinghamshire, and a trust-wide post can involve both.

Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, known as RDaSH, provides mental health, learning disability and community services and is based in Doncaster. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls.

City of Doncaster Council

Doncaster is a metropolitan borough, so one council runs all local services: adult and children’s social care, education services, housing, planning, highways, waste and public health. It is led by a directly elected mayor, and it is one of the four councils in the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority alongside Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Council pay is on the NJC spine. From 1 April 2026 it starts at £25,614 at SCP 3, and a mid-range officer post on SCP 20 pays £33,673. Full-time staff get at least 23 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after five years. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme, where someone earning £18,401 to £29,000 pays 5.8 per cent in the main section in 2026/27 and someone on £29,001 to £47,300 pays 6.5 per cent. How to get a council job covers the application process.

Prisons east of the city

Several prisons sit around Hatfield Woodhouse, a few miles east of Doncaster, including HMP Lindholme and HMP Moorland. Between them they employ prison officers, operational support grades, healthcare and education staff, administrators and probation staff. HM Prison and Probation Service recruits officers through national campaigns where you choose your preferred prison, and other roles appear on Civil Service Jobs.

Prison officer pay is set nationally and the current rates are on HMPPS adverts. How to become a prison officer explains the assessment and training.

Police and fire

South Yorkshire Police covers Doncaster from its headquarters at Carbrook in Sheffield. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015 at the top of the scale. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue pays national rates: £31,539 for firefighters in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.

Schools

Doncaster’s schools are a mix of academies, many run by multi-academy trusts, and council-maintained schools. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 and reach £46,940 at M6 under the accepted award, with maintained schools paying the new rates once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff are on the NJC spine and usually term-time only, so the annual figure on the advert is a share of the full-time salary.

Sheffield, Leeds and beyond

Doncaster is on the East Coast Main Line. Sheffield is a short train ride south west, with its teaching hospitals, children’s hospital and city council, while Leeds and York are within commuting range to the north. Public sector jobs in Sheffield and public sector jobs in Leeds cover both cities.
