Public sector jobs in Glasgow

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest employer in Glasgow and one of the largest health boards in the UK. Glasgow City Council, the city’s schools and the national bodies with offices in the city, including the Scottish Government, Social Security Scotland, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, account for most other public sector jobs. Pay is on Scottish scales, which are set separately from England’s and are usually higher at the same band or grade.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

The health board runs the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Royal Hospital for Children and many other hospitals and community services across Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Dunbartonshire. Its size means recruitment is constant in every profession, from domestic and portering staff to consultants.

Agenda for Change in Scotland gives 3.75 per cent from 1 April 2026, the second year of a two-year deal. A band 2 healthcare support worker earns £26,658 to £28,947, a band 5 nurse £34,494 rising through £36,857 to £42,977, and a band 6 £43,169 to £52,603. All NHS Scotland jobs are on the national NHS Scotland jobs site. The Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS 24 also recruit in the Glasgow area.

Glasgow City Council

Glasgow City Council is Scotland’s largest local authority. It runs education, social work, housing services, roads, waste, parks and libraries. Some services are delivered through arm’s-length organisations owned by the council, such as the city’s culture and leisure trust, so check who the employer is on the advert. Council jobs are listed on myjobscotland. Pay follows Scottish local government arrangements and the English NJC spine does not apply, so the grade names and salaries on a Glasgow advert will not match an English council’s. Council staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme (Scotland), which has its own contribution bands, and the Strathclyde Pension Fund administers it for councils in the west of Scotland.

Teaching in Glasgow

The council runs a large number of primary, secondary and additional support needs schools in Glasgow. Scottish teachers are on the SNCT scale, and the second year of a two-year deal gave 3.25 per cent from 1 August 2026:

Post Salary from 1 August 2026
Probationer £36,159
Main grade £43,383 to £54,453
Chartered teacher £56,142 to £66,759
Principal teacher £59,367 to £76,617
Depute and headteacher £67,332 to £124,365

New teachers usually spend their probation year through the Teacher Induction Scheme and must register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Teacher pay in Scotland explains how the scale works.

National bodies and government offices

Social Security Scotland has offices in Glasgow as well as its Dundee headquarters, recruiting client advisers, decision makers and support staff. The Scottish Government employs staff at offices in the city, and UK government departments have Glasgow sites too, advertised on Civil Service Jobs. Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service both have a big presence across the city. Firefighters are on the UK-wide NJC rates: £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026.

Checks, tax and student loans

Most jobs working with children or protected adults in Scotland need membership of the PVG scheme, run by Disclosure Scotland. Joining costs £59 (free for volunteers), and a five-year membership model began on 1 April 2026. Basic and standard level disclosures cost £25.

If you live in Scotland you pay Scottish income tax, starting at 19 per cent on gross income from £12,571 to £16,537, with an intermediate 21 per cent band up to £43,662 and 42 per cent above that to £75,000. Graduates who studied in Scotland usually repay under Plan 4, which starts at £33,795 a year in 2026/27, and student loan Plan 4 has the details. Public sector jobs in Scotland covers pensions and other differences, and Edinburgh is under an hour away by train (public sector jobs in Edinburgh).
