Public sector jobs in Hereford

Herefordshire Council and Wye Valley NHS Trust, which runs Hereford County Hospital, are the city’s two largest public employers. Schools, the county’s mental health trust, West Mercia Police and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service account for most other public jobs. Herefordshire is a large, rural county with Wales on its western edge, so commuting distances and cross-border pay rules both come into play.

Herefordshire Council

Herefordshire Council has been a unitary authority since 1998, so one council runs every local service: adult social care, children’s services, education, housing, planning, waste, highways, libraries and public health. Its jobs are on the NJC spine, which from 1 April 2026 runs from £25,614 at SCP 3 to £56,293 at SCP 43, and staff can join the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Many council jobs cover the whole county, not just Hereford. Social workers, occupational therapists, highways inspectors and environmental health officers often drive between market towns and villages. Check whether a post comes with an essential car user allowance, lease car or mileage at the approved rate. Car allowances and essential user status explains the different arrangements and how mileage payments are taxed.

Wye Valley NHS Trust and mental health services

Wye Valley NHS Trust runs Hereford County Hospital and also provides community health services across Herefordshire, including community hospitals in market towns and district nursing teams. So the trust advertises a wide range of jobs, from emergency department nurses to community therapy assistants. Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust provides mental health and learning disability services, and West Midlands Ambulance Service covers 999 calls.

The trust pays Agenda for Change rates for England. From 1 April 2026, band 2 is £25,272, band 3 runs from £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. Rural community posts are often band 5 or 6 and may expect a full driving licence.

Living near the Welsh border

Income tax status follows your main home. If you live in Herefordshire you are an English taxpayer, wherever you work; if you live in Powys or Monmouthshire you are a Welsh taxpayer, even if your job is in Hereford. Welsh taxpayers have a C at the start of their tax code. For 2026/27 the Welsh Government kept its rates level with England’s, so the deductions come out the same. Welsh tax codes explains how to spot a wrong prefix and what to do about it.

Pay rules differ when the job is in Wales. NHS staff in Wales are on Welsh Agenda for Change terms, where a 3.3 per cent award for 2026/27 has been reported. Teacher pay in Wales has its own pay document, and for 2026/27 the Welsh Government said it would consult on 3.5 per cent, so check Welsh Government announcements for the confirmed rates before comparing a Welsh post with one in Herefordshire. Some public jobs in Wales also ask for Welsh language skills, at levels set out on each advert. Working in the Welsh public sector covers the differences in more detail.

West Mercia Police and the fire service

West Mercia Police covers Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Worcestershire, a large and mostly rural area. A constable joining now starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and progresses to £52,015 at the top of the scale. Rural policing means long distances between stations and calls, and the force also recruits PCSOs, call handlers and other police staff.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service covers both counties. Firefighters are paid national rates, £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026. Many of its stations outside the cities are crewed by on-call firefighters, who are paid a retainer plus fees for each call and training session. On-call firefighter explains how that works around another job.

Schools

Herefordshire has a lot of small rural primaries alongside secondary schools in Hereford and the market towns. Teachers in England outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, rising to £46,940 at M6. Support staff are usually on the NJC spine and paid term-time only. Small schools tend to combine roles, so a teaching assistant post might include lunchtime supervision or admin hours.

Worcester is the nearest large city and shares the mental health trust, police force and fire service with Hereford. Public sector jobs in Worcester covers its hospital, county council and other employers.

Common questions

If I live in Hereford and work in Wales, do I pay Welsh income tax?

No. Welsh income tax status follows where your main home is, and your employer's location makes no difference. A Hereford resident working for a Welsh health board pays income tax at the rates for England, although for 2026/27 the totals are the same either way.
