Public sector jobs in Huddersfield
Huddersfield is the largest town in Kirklees, and Kirklees Council is its biggest public sector employer, followed by the hospital trust that runs Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Schools employ large numbers of teachers and support staff, and West Yorkshire’s police, fire and ambulance services all recruit in the area. Leeds, Bradford and Manchester are each within reach by train, which widens the choice beyond the town itself.
Hospitals and health services
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust runs Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax. The two sites share services between them, so some posts are cross-site and the advert says where you will be based. North Kirklees, around Dewsbury, is served by Dewsbury and District Hospital, part of Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust.
South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and learning disability services across Kirklees and neighbouring areas, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls. All of these pay Agenda for Change rates for England. From 1 April 2026, band 3 is £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 is £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 is £39,959 to £48,117.
NHS staff join the NHS Pension Scheme, with contributions that rise with pay.
| Pensionable pay (2026/27) | Member contribution |
|---|---|
| £13,260 to £28,854 | 6.5% |
| £28,855 to £35,155 | 8.3% |
| £35,156 to £52,778 | 9.8% |
| £52,779 to £67,668 | 10.7% |
A band 3 healthcare assistant at the top of the band (£27,476) pays 6.5 per cent. A band 6 nurse at the entry point (£39,959) pays 9.8 per cent.
Kirklees Council
Kirklees is a metropolitan borough, so a single council runs all local services for Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley and the Colne and Holme valleys. That covers adult and children’s social care, education services, housing, planning, highways, waste, libraries and public health. Jobs may be based in Huddersfield or Dewsbury, and frontline roles often cover the whole borough.
Kirklees is one of the five councils in the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which has an elected mayor and its own staff working on transport, skills and the economy. Council pay is on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. On £29,001 to £47,300 the 2026/27 main-section rate is 6.5 per cent, and above that, up to £59,800, it is 6.8 per cent.
Schools
Kirklees has a large number of primary schools, a mix of maintained schools and academies, plus secondary schools, sixth forms and special schools. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the accepted award, rising to £46,940 at M6 and £52,835 at the top of the upper pay range. Maintained schools pay these rates once the 2026 pay document is in force, backdated to September.
Teaching assistants are paid on the NJC spine, pro rata for hours and usually term-time only, so a post advertised at SCP 7 (£27,274 full-time) pays noticeably less in practice. Teaching assistant pay explained shows how the advertised figure is worked out. School vacancies appear on Teaching Vacancies, the council’s site and trust websites.
West Yorkshire Police and the fire service
West Yorkshire Police covers Kirklees from its headquarters in Wakefield. A new constable earns £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is headquartered at Birkenshaw in the north of Kirklees, and recruits firefighters, control staff and support staff there. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
Leeds, Bradford and Manchester
Huddersfield is on the line between Leeds and Manchester, with direct trains to both. Leeds has the largest concentration of public sector jobs in West Yorkshire, and public sector jobs in Leeds covers them. Bradford, to the north, has its own hospital trust and council, listed in public sector jobs in Bradford. Pay on national scales is the same in all three, so the trade-off is travel time against the number of vacancies. Run your figures through the take-home pay calculator before you add a commute.
