Public sector jobs in Lancaster

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary is the city’s largest public sector workplace, run by the trust that covers the whole of Morecambe Bay. Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council, schools and a prison on the edge of the city account for most other public sector jobs, with Lancashire’s police and fire services recruiting from headquarters near Preston. Pay is on national scales, and Preston is close enough to commute.

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust runs three hospitals: the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. The trust recruits for all three, and the drive from Lancaster to Barrow is long, so check the base on any advert before applying. Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services, and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls.

All three trusts pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026.

Band Example roles Pay

Band 6 Senior nurse, specialist practitioner £39,959 to £48,117

Band 5 takes two years to move from the entry point (£32,073) to the intermediate point (£34,592), and another two to reach the top. NHS band 5 pay and jobs explains how progression works at that level.

City and county councils

Lancashire has two tiers of local government. Lancaster City Council is the district council for Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham, Carnforth and the surrounding rural area, which includes part of the Forest of Bowland. It handles council housing, planning, environmental health, waste collection, parks, leisure and council tax. Lancashire County Council, based in Preston, runs social care, education services, highways and libraries, and employs many frontline staff who work in the Lancaster district.

Council pay is on the NJC spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026 and reaches £56,293 at SCP 43. Councils put their own grades onto the spine, so the advert’s grade tells you the range. Green Book sick pay rises with service, from one month’s full pay and (after four months’ service) two months’ half pay in the first year to six months of each after five years; sick pay for council staff has the full scale.

HMP Lancaster Farms

HMP Lancaster Farms is a prison on the eastern edge of the city, run by HM Prison and Probation Service. It recruits prison officers, operational support grades, and staff in healthcare, education, administration and offender management. Prison officer pay is set nationally and the current rates are on HMPPS adverts; how to become a prison officer covers the selection process and training.

Police, fire and schools

Lancashire Constabulary has its headquarters at Hutton, south of Preston. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reaches £52,015 at the top of the scale. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service pays firefighters £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.

Lancaster has two selective grammar schools, Lancaster Royal Grammar School and Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, alongside comprehensives, maintained primaries and academies. Lancashire County Council is the local authority for maintained schools. Teachers start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the accepted award, with maintained schools paying the new rates once the 2026 pay document is in force. A full-time classroom teacher in England can be directed to work up to 1,265 hours over 195 days a year.

Commuting from Lancaster

Lancaster is on the West Coast Main Line. Preston is a short train ride south and has the Royal Preston Hospital, County Hall and the police and fire headquarters, so it widens the choice considerably. Public sector jobs in Preston covers those employers. Manchester is reachable by direct train for anyone willing to make a longer daily journey, and north of Lancaster the options thin out quickly until Kendal and Barrow.
