Public sector jobs in Lincoln

Lincoln is Lincolnshire’s county town, so the county council, the main hospital trust’s largest site and the county’s mental health trust all employ large numbers of people there. City of Lincoln Council, schools and Lincolnshire Police add more. The RAF stations north and south of the city bring military and Ministry of Defence civilian jobs within commuting distance. Most pay follows national scales.

County and city councils

Lincolnshire County Council runs adult and children’s social care, education services, highways, libraries, public health and the county’s fire and rescue service from its offices in Lincoln. City of Lincoln Council is the district council and handles council housing, planning, environmental health, waste collection and leisure in the city. It still owns and manages a large stock of council homes, so it recruits housing officers, repairs staff and tenancy support workers.

Both councils use the NJC pay spine, which starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) from 1 April 2026. The county covers a large rural area, so many county council jobs involve travel. Adverts say whether you need a car and whether the council pays an essential car user allowance; essential car user allowance explains how that works.

NHS employers

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust runs Lincoln County Hospital along with Pilgrim Hospital in Boston and Grantham and District Hospital. It now works as a group with Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, which provides community nursing, therapies and community hospitals. Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is based in the city and provides mental health and learning disability services. East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers 999 calls.

All pay Agenda for Change rates for England. From 1 April 2026, band 3 runs from £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. Lincoln County Hospital is the largest site, but trust-wide posts can mean working at Boston or Grantham, a long drive away, so check the base on the advert.

RAF stations and defence jobs

Lincolnshire has more RAF activity than most counties. RAF Waddington, a few miles south of Lincoln, is a major station for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, and RAF Coningsby and RAF Cranwell are within driving distance. The stations employ serving personnel and Ministry of Defence civil servants in admin, finance, logistics, engineering and support roles, plus contractors.

Route Starting pay (from 1 April 2026)
Other ranks new entrant (all three services) £27,282
Junior officer new entrant £35,926

These figures come from secondary reporting of the 3.6 per cent armed forces award. MOD civilian roles are paid on the department’s own Civil Service grades and appear on Civil Service Jobs. MOD civilian jobs and joining the RAF cover each route.

Police and fire

Lincolnshire Police has its headquarters at Nettleham, just outside Lincoln. A new constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reaches £52,015 at the top of the scale. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is part of the county council. It pays national rates of £31,539 for firefighters in development and £40,358 when competent, from 1 July 2026, and relies heavily on on-call firefighters in the county’s market towns and villages.

Schools

Lincolnshire still has grammar schools. In and around Lincoln there are also maintained schools and academies, many of them in multi-academy trusts that run schools elsewhere in the county. Teacher pay outside London starts at £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the award accepted in July 2026. Maintained schools pay the new rates once the 2026 pay document is in force, backdated to September. Support staff are on the NJC spine and usually paid term-time only.

Jobs in the county are spread thinly, so set a realistic travel radius when you search, especially if you rely on public transport. Nottingham is about an hour by train and has a much larger pool of NHS and council jobs. Public sector jobs in Nottingham covers them.
