Public sector jobs in Slough

Teachers in Slough are paid on the London fringe ranges, which puts a newly qualified teacher on £35,602 from 1 September 2026, more than the £34,069 paid in most of England. The main public employers are Slough Borough Council, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust at Wexham Park Hospital, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the schools and Thames Valley Police. Heathrow is a few miles away, and Border Force recruits there.

Fringe pay for teachers

Slough is one of the Berkshire districts named in the fringe area of the teachers’ pay document, alongside Bracknell Forest and Windsor and Maidenhead. Maintained schools must pay at least the fringe minimums; academies set their own pay policies, though most follow the same ranges. The table compares three points on the scale.

Point, from 1 September 2026 Rest of England Fringe (Slough) Outer London
M1 £34,069 £35,602 £39,196
M6 £46,940 £48,479 £52,241
U3 £52,835 £54,328 £58,120

Hillingdon, the London borough across the M25, is in the outer London zone. A job at a school there pays noticeably more, and some Slough teachers make that move, weighing the extra pay against fares and travel time. Maintained schools pay the 2026 rates, backdated to September, once the 2026 pay document is in force.

Slough is a selective area, with several grammar schools alongside comprehensive academies, and a young population that keeps demand for school places high. Teacher pay in London covers the London ranges in full.

Wexham Park and NHS fringe pay

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust runs Wexham Park Hospital, the acute hospital for Slough and east Berkshire, as well as Frimley Park in Surrey and Heatherwood in Ascot. Some posts cover more than one site. Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and community services across the county, and South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 calls.

NHS staff in the fringe zone get a high cost area supplement of 5 per cent of basic pay, with a minimum of £1,346 and a maximum of £2,270 a year. That takes a band 5 entry salary from £32,073 to £33,677. Whether a particular post qualifies depends on the employer and the work base, and the advert should say so. The NHS high cost area supplement explains how the zones work and how the supplement is worked out for part-time staff.

Slough Borough Council

Berkshire has had no county council since 1998, so Slough Borough Council is a unitary authority and runs all council services in the town, including adult social care, children’s services, housing, planning, waste and highways. Its pay is based on the NJC spine, which runs from £25,614 at SCP 3 to £56,293 at SCP 43 from 1 April 2026. Councils near London often add their own local allowances or market supplements to hard-to-fill roles such as social work, so read the full pay section of each advert.

Windsor and Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire Council and the London Borough of Hillingdon are all within easy reach and recruit separately, so set job alerts with more than one council.

Heathrow and Border Force

Border Force, part of the Home Office, recruits border force officers and assistant officers to work at Heathrow, checking passengers and goods. These are Civil Service posts advertised on Civil Service Jobs, with pay set by the Home Office and shown on each advert. The work is shift-based, includes nights and weekends, and needs security vetting before you start. Border Force officer covers the selection process and what the job involves.

Thames Valley Police and Royal Berkshire Fire

Thames Valley Police covers Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Constables appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026, rising to £52,015 at the top of the scale. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service pays national firefighter rates of £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026.

Getting around

The Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway both stop at Slough, so central London, Reading and Heathrow are all practical commutes. Many public employers offer an interest-free loan for an annual season ticket, repaid from salary, which season ticket loans explains. Public sector jobs in Reading covers the employers to the west.
