Public sector jobs in Telford

Most public sector jobs in Telford are with Telford and Wrekin Council or the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. The council runs every local service in the borough, and the hospital trust runs the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury. Schools, community health teams and the police and fire services covering Shropshire add the rest.

Telford and Wrekin Council

Telford and Wrekin is a unitary council, so there is no county council above it. It employs staff in adult social care, children’s services, education, housing, planning, highways, waste, leisure and libraries. The borough takes in the new town of Telford, the market towns of Wellington and Newport, and rural parishes, so some outdoor and community jobs mean travelling across a wide area.

Council pay follows the NJC spine. From 1 April 2026 it starts at £25,614 (SCP 3) and reaches £56,293 at SCP 43, which works out at about £13.28 an hour at the bottom for a 37-hour week. Green Book terms give at least 23 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays and 2 extra days, rising to 26 days after 5 years. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme: on £18,401 to £29,000 you pay 5.8 per cent in 2026/27, and on £29,001 to £47,300 it is 6.5 per cent.

The council advertises on its own website. Shropshire Council, the separate unitary council for the rest of the county, does the same, and where councils advertise jobs lists the other places to look.

The Princess Royal Hospital and other NHS employers

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust splits services between its two hospitals, so a ward or department may be at one site only, or staff may rotate between them. Check the base on the advert, and ask at interview whether cross-site working is expected.

Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust provides community nursing, therapy and community hospital services across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin. West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust covers 999 calls.

All of these pay Agenda for Change rates for England from 1 April 2026.

Band Pay Common roles
2 £25,272 Healthcare assistant, porter, domestic
3 £25,760 to £27,476 Senior HCA, medical secretary
5 £32,073 to £39,043 Staff nurse, radiographer
6 £39,959 to £48,117 Senior staff nurse, specialist therapist

NHS Pension Scheme contributions are taken from your whole pensionable pay in tiers. On £13,260 to £28,854 you pay 6.5 per cent, and on £28,855 to £35,155 it is 8.3 per cent, so a nurse starting at the bottom of band 5 pays the higher of the two. Full-time staff get 27 days’ leave plus 8 public holidays, rising after 5 and 10 years of NHS service.

Police and fire

West Mercia Police covers Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Constables appointed now start on £32,255 from 1 September 2026 and reach £52,015 at the top of the scale. The force also hires PCSOs, call handlers and police staff investigators.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Telford. From 1 July 2026 firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, on national rates. Like most rural services it depends heavily on on-call firefighters who live or work near a station and respond when paged. How to become an on-call firefighter explains the commitment and the pay basis.

Schools

Telford and Wrekin Council is the local authority for maintained schools, and many secondaries are academies. Vacancies go on the council’s schools pages, academy trust websites and Teaching Vacancies. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026, and maintained schools pay it, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Support staff such as teaching assistants and lunchtime supervisors are paid on the NJC spine, mostly term-time only.

Commuting out

Telford Central station is on the line to Wolverhampton and Birmingham, and the M54 runs the same way. Wolverhampton has a large NHS trust, a city council and a government department’s second headquarters, while Birmingham is a far bigger market again. Public sector jobs in Wolverhampton and public sector jobs in Birmingham cover them.
