Public sector jobs in Wrexham

Wrexham’s largest public sector workplace is Wrexham Maelor Hospital, run by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Wrexham County Borough Council, HMP Berwyn, the town’s schools and the North Wales police and fire services provide most of the other jobs. Because Wrexham is a few miles from the English border, many staff live in Cheshire or Shropshire, and plenty of Wrexham residents work in Chester.

Health: Betsi Cadwaladr and the Maelor

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is the NHS body for the whole of North Wales. Wrexham Maelor is one of its three main hospitals and has an emergency department, so it recruits nurses, healthcare support workers, allied health professionals, doctors, porters, domestic staff and admin teams. The health board also runs community and mental health services in and around Wrexham. The Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust covers 999 calls.

NHS Wales uses Agenda for Change bands, but the Welsh Government sets the award. According to RCN reports, it announced 3.3 per cent for 2026/27. The Welsh band values are published in Welsh circulars, so check the advert for the exact salary, which can differ slightly from the English figures. Most NHS Wales jobs are listed on NHS Jobs or Trac.

Wrexham County Borough Council

The council is a unitary authority. It runs schools, social services, housing, highways, waste and recycling, libraries and leisure. Vacancies are on its own website.

Councils in Wales use the NJC pay spine, so the 3.3 per cent award from 1 April 2026 applies here. Selected points on the 2026/27 spine:

Spine point Annual salary
SCP 3 £25,614
SCP 7 £27,274
SCP 12 £29,542
SCP 17 £32,046
SCP 22 £34,811
SCP 27 £39,481

These are worked out from the 2025 values and the 3.3 per cent award, so confirm against the advert. Each council fits its own grades to the spine. NJC pay spine 2026/27 lists every point.

Council and school support staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. On pay between £18,401 and £29,000 the 2026/27 main section rate is 5.8 per cent, and between £29,001 and £47,300 it is 6.5 per cent.

HMP Berwyn

HMP Berwyn, on the edge of Wrexham, is one of the largest prisons in the UK. It is run by HM Prison and Probation Service, which recruits prison officers, operational support grades, healthcare and education staff and administrators. Prison officer jobs are advertised in national campaigns with the pay band for the site stated. How to become a prison officer covers the tests and training.

Schools

Wrexham schools follow the Welsh school teachers’ pay and conditions document, which is separate from England’s. For 2026/27 the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body recommended 4.25 per cent. In July 2026 the Welsh Government said it would consult on 3.5 per cent, with 5 per cent for unqualified teachers, so the Welsh award was not settled in October 2026. Wrexham has Welsh-medium schools alongside English-medium ones, and teaching posts in them need fluent Welsh.

Police, fire and Welsh language

North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service both cover Wrexham. Police constables appointed now start on £32,255 (PP1) from 1 September 2026, the same as in England. Firefighters are on the UK-wide NJC rates: £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.

Public bodies in Wales must follow the Welsh language standards, and many adverts list Welsh as essential or desirable at a stated level, so check each advert before you apply. Welsh language requirements explains the levels.

Checks and tax across the border

DBS checks cover both England and Wales. From 5 October 2026 a basic or standard check costs £20 and an enhanced check £41. Income tax depends on where you live. If you live in Wrexham you pay Welsh rates, which for 2026/27 give the same total as England’s, and your tax code has a C prefix. If you live in Chester and work in Wrexham, you pay English rates. Public sector jobs in Wales covers the wider Welsh system, and public sector jobs in Chester covers the English side of the border.
