Hospital pharmacist pay

A newly registered pharmacist in an NHS hospital in England usually starts on band 6, which pays £39,959 at the entry point and £48,117 at the top from 1 April 2026. Health Careers says you could reach band 9 as a chief pharmacist, where pay runs from £112,782 to £129,783. In between, the pay depends on how fast you move from rotational posts into specialist and lead roles.

What the foundation training year pays

Before you register you complete a one year paid foundation training placement after the four year MPharm degree. In England, NHS England pays the hosting site a grant for each trainee: £27,295 per trainee for those starting in the 2025/26 summer and autumn windows. The grant is described as a contribution to all the costs of hosting a trainee, including supervision, administration and salary costs, so it is not a salary figure. The employer decides what the trainee earns and states it in the advert. The Community Pharmacy England page gave no 2026/27 amount when we checked, so ask the employer.

Pay from band 6 to band 9

All figures are England, from 1 April 2026, and each band has an entry point and a top point. Bands 5 and above also have a middle point.

Band Entry Top Rise from the previous band’s top to this band’s entry
6 £39,959 £48,117 n/a
7 £49,387 £56,515 £1,270
8a £57,528 £64,750 £1,013
8b £66,582 £77,368 £1,832
8c £79,504 £91,609 £2,136
8d £94,356 £108,814 £2,747
9 £112,782 £129,783 £3,968

The last column shows what a promotion adds. A band 6 pharmacist at the top of the band who wins a band 7 post moves up by £1,270 a year. The £9,428 gap between the two entry points only applies to someone who is at the band 6 entry point. The big gains come from the annual steps inside a band and from progressing over several years, so a promotion on its own can look modest on paper. The pay progression guide explains how steps work, and the band 6 and band 7 pages cover the roles at each level.

Typical titles at each band vary by trust. Rotational and ward pharmacists sit lower, specialist and clinical pharmacists higher, and the hospital pharmacist profile describes the specialist routes. Ask for the job description if a trust’s title is unclear, because the band is decided by the duties.

London and the high cost area supplement

Inner London trusts add 20% of basic pay, with a minimum of £5,794 and a maximum of £8,746. At the band 6 entry point 20% is £7,992, which falls inside those limits. Outer London adds 15% (minimum £4,870, maximum £6,137) and the fringe adds 5% (minimum £1,346, maximum £2,270). The high cost area supplement guide has the rules.

Pension tiers by band

The NHS Pension Scheme rate applies to all of your pensionable pay and depends on the salary:

Pensionable pay Member rate
£35,156 to £52,778 9.8%
£52,779 to £67,668 10.7%
£67,669 and above 12.5%

All of band 6 and the first two points of band 7 fall in the 9.8% tier. The top of band 7, all of band 8a and the start of band 8b are at 10.7%, and the middle and top points of band 8b upwards are at 12.5%. The NHS Pension Scheme guide explains what you get for it, and the take-home pay calculator shows net pay once tax, National Insurance and the pension are taken off.

Outside the NHS hospital route

Health Careers says community pharmacy pay is typically in line with Agenda for Change rates but may differ, and primary care and private employers set their own. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate Agenda for Change scales, so England figures do not apply there. If you need a visa, check the Health and Care Worker visa guide for the salary rules before you accept an offer.

Common questions

Do hospital pharmacists get paid more than community pharmacists?

Health Careers says community pharmacy pay is typically in line with Agenda for Change rates, though it may differ. Employers outside the NHS set their own pay, so compare the salary on each advert.

Is band 6 the same pay everywhere in England?

The basic salary is national, from £39,959 to £48,117 from 1 April 2026. London and fringe areas add a high cost area supplement on top.
