Public sector jobs in Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council and the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, employ more people in the town than any other public bodies. The community health trust, the mental health trust, schools, West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service make up most of the rest. A specialist orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry and the neighbouring borough of Telford and Wrekin add more options within commuting distance.

Two hospitals, one trust

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust runs two acute hospitals about 15 miles apart: the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. The trust has long-running plans to reorganise services so that one site concentrates on emergency care and the other on planned care. Before you apply, check where the specialty is based now and whether staff are expected to work at both hospitals.

Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust runs community hospitals, district nursing, health visiting and therapy services across the county. Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services in Shropshire, and West Midlands Ambulance Service covers 999 calls.

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Oswestry, in the north of the county, is a specialist orthopaedic hospital that recruits theatre staff, nurses, physiotherapists and support workers. All of these trusts pay Agenda for Change rates for England. How NHS trusts work explains the difference between acute, community, mental health and specialist trusts.

Shropshire Council

Shropshire became a unitary county in 2009, when the county council and its five district councils were replaced by Shropshire Council. It runs all local services outside Telford and Wrekin, from adult social care and children’s services to planning, waste, highways and libraries. The county is large and rural, and many council roles involve covering market towns such as Oswestry, Ludlow, Bridgnorth and Market Drayton as well as Shrewsbury.

Council pay starts from the NJC spine, with SCP 3 at £25,614 and SCP 43 at £56,293 from 1 April 2026. Staff can join the Local Government Pension Scheme, where someone earning between £29,001 and £47,300 pays 6.5 per cent of pay in the main section in 2026/27.

Telford and Wrekin Council is a separate unitary authority with its own recruitment. Public sector jobs in Telford covers the employers there.

Police and fire

West Mercia Police covers Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Officers can be posted anywhere in that area, so a Shrewsbury applicant may be based in another county. The force also employs police staff in roles from call handling to forensic investigation.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service covers the county and Telford, and many of its stations in rural areas are crewed by on-call firefighters. Firefighters receive national pay, which rose by 3.8 per cent from 1 July 2026; competent firefighters earn £18.43 an hour.

Teaching in Shropshire

Shropshire schools pay teachers on the rest of England ranges, and maintained schools apply the 2026 award from 1 September, backdated, once the 2026 pay document is in force. Shrewsbury has secondary academies and maintained schools, and the county has many small rural primaries where staff often teach mixed-age classes. Support staff are on the NJC spine as a base and usually paid term-time only.

Wrexham, over the Welsh border to the north, is the nearest large town in Wales, with its own hospital and council. NHS and teaching jobs there follow Welsh pay arrangements, and your income tax status follows your home address. Public sector jobs in Wrexham covers those employers.
