Public sector jobs in Stirling
Stirling sits between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a lot of its public sector workforce commutes in from both directions, or out to them. Inside the council area, the main employers are Stirling Council, NHS Forth Valley, the University of Stirling, Forth Valley College and the Scottish Prison Service. Schools, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service account for most of the rest. Every job here is on Scottish pay and terms.
Stirling Council and schools
Stirling Council is a unitary authority. It covers the city and a large rural area to the north and west, including Callander, Killin and the villages around Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. It runs schools, children’s services, housing, roads, waste collection, planning and libraries, and it advertises on myjobscotland. Scottish councils have their own pay arrangements, so the English NJC spine does not apply. Take the grade and salary from the advert.
Adult health and social care in Stirling is planned jointly with Clackmannanshire Council and NHS Forth Valley through a health and social care partnership. Care at home, social work and occupational therapy posts can be with the council or the health board, and the advert says which. Your employer matters for pension and sick pay, so check it before you accept.
Teachers in Stirling’s schools are paid on the SNCT scales, which rose 3.25 per cent from 1 August 2026:
| Post | Pay from 1 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Probationer | £36,159 |
| Main grade | £43,383 to £54,453 |
| Chartered teacher | £56,142 to £66,759 |
| Principal teacher | £59,367 to £76,617 |
| Depute or headteacher | £67,332 to £124,365 |
The figures come from union and press reports of the deal. Teaching in Scotland needs registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, and teachers trained in England usually have to apply for it before they can start. Teacher pay in Scotland has more on the scale.
NHS Forth Valley
NHS Forth Valley is the health board for the Stirling, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire council areas. Its main acute hospital, Forth Valley Royal, is in Larbert, a few miles south of Stirling in the Falkirk council area, so most hospital jobs for Stirling residents mean travelling there. Stirling Community Hospital and health centres in the city have outpatient, community and primary care posts.
Agenda for Change pay in Scotland rose 3.75 per cent from 1 April 2026. Band 3 runs from £29,061 to £31,364, band 5 starts at £34,494, and band 6 starts at £43,169. If average CPI for 2026 is above 2.75 per cent, an extra top-up will be paid in March 2027. NHS Forth Valley advertises on the NHS Scotland jobs site.
The prison and the university
The Scottish Prison Service runs HMP and YOI Stirling, a prison for women. Scottish prison officer pay and recruitment are separate from HM Prison and Probation Service in England and Wales, and SPS advertises its own campaigns with the pay stated. The English route described in how to become a prison officer describes the work, though the training and terms in Scotland differ.
The University of Stirling and Forth Valley College employ lecturers, researchers, technicians, administrators and estates staff. They are publicly funded, but each sets its own pay scales and advertises on its own site.
Police and fire
Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are national bodies with stations and offices in Stirling. Both recruit civilian staff as well as officers and firefighters. Police officer pay in Scotland is not the same as the England and Wales scale. Firefighters are on the UK-wide NJC rates: £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
Checks and the move to Scottish terms
Jobs with children or protected adults need membership of the PVG scheme, run by Disclosure Scotland, which costs £59 to join and £18 to renew. An English DBS certificate does not count for a Scottish post. Since 1 April 2026 PVG membership runs for five years before it needs renewing.
Scottish income tax applies to anyone who lives in Scotland. For a teacher above the first point of the main grade, part of the salary falls in the 42 per cent band, which starts at £43,663 in 2026/27, so take-home pay can look different from a similar salary in England. The take-home pay calculator shows the difference. Public sector jobs in Scotland covers pensions and the other changes, and if you are looking along the commuter line, see public sector jobs in Glasgow and public sector jobs in Edinburgh.
Common questions
Does living in Stirling and working in Glasgow or Edinburgh change my tax?
No. Scottish income tax depends on where you live, so anyone living in Stirling pays Scottish rates wherever in Scotland the job is. Your employer applies the S prefix on your tax code once HMRC has your Scottish address.
