Public sector jobs in Lisburn
Lagan Valley Hospital, run by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, is the largest public employer in Lisburn itself. Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, local schools and the Education Authority add to it, and many people who live in Lisburn work in Belfast. Jobs, pay and criminal record checks run on Northern Ireland systems.
Lagan Valley Hospital and the South Eastern Trust
The Lisburn Primary and Community Care Centre is on the hospital site, and the Trust’s site also lists an Urgent Care Centre and the GP Out of Hours service for Lisburn. The hospital’s main number is 028 9266 5141.
The South Eastern Trust runs six hospitals: Ards Community, Bangor Community, Downe, Downshire, Lagan Valley and the Ulster Hospital. It covers the Ards, North Down, Down and Lisburn council areas and serves about 345,000 people. Health and social care jobs are on the HSC jobs site, not NHS Jobs.
Staff are on Agenda for Change bands, but pay awards need Executive funding, and the 2026/27 award for Northern Ireland health staff had no confirmed payment date in October 2026.
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council
The council covers Lisburn, Castlereagh and the rural areas around them. It has fewer powers than an English council. It runs waste and recycling, leisure centres, parks, planning, building control and environmental health, but not education, social care, roads or housing.
Vacancies appear on an external recruitment portal that is linked from the council’s job opportunities page. The council’s Labour Market Partnership, funded by the Department for Communities, held a job fair at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex on 26 February 2026, and the council hosts others during the year. Local council jobs in Northern Ireland compares pay and terms across all 11 councils, and the Green Book scales apply.
Commuting to Belfast
Lisburn is close to Belfast, so the city’s big employers are within reach: the Northern Ireland Civil Service, the Belfast Trust, Belfast City Council and the Education Authority. The Belfast guide lists them. HSC trusts share one jobs site, so a Lisburn resident can look at the South Eastern, Belfast and Southern trusts in one place.
Translink runs the bus and train services in Northern Ireland, so check its timetables and fares before you accept a job that depends on a regular journey.
Schools and the Education Authority
Teachers in Northern Ireland have their own pay scale, with no M1 point. The latest confirmed award is 4 per cent from 1 September 2025, which put M2 at £32,916, M4 at £37,809 and M6 at £43,830. No 2026/27 offer had been confirmed by October 2026. Teachers must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland. Teacher pay in Northern Ireland has the full scale.
Teaching posts are usually advertised by the school or its managing body. The Education Authority recruits classroom assistants and other school support staff.
Police and fire
The Police Service of Northern Ireland recruits in periodic campaigns, and police pay in Northern Ireland is set separately from England and Wales. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service follows the UK-wide NJC fire award. Firefighters earn £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026.
Colleges and other employers
Northern Ireland has six further education colleges, including Belfast Metropolitan College and South Eastern Regional College, and they recruit lecturers and support staff. nidirect has the full list of colleges. Civil service posts in Belfast run through HRConnect, and how to apply to the NI Civil Service explains the merit-list system. HSC applications work differently, and the guide to applying for HSC jobs covers the form and shortlisting.
Checks and tax
Criminal record checks come from AccessNI. Basic and standard checks cost £16 and enhanced checks cost £32. Roles with children or vulnerable adults need an enhanced check, and your employer usually starts the application.
Income tax and National Insurance are the same as in England, so the take-home pay calculator applies in Lisburn too.
