Public sector jobs in Newry
The biggest public employers around Newry are the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, which runs Daisy Hill Hospital in the city, and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, which says it has around 1,000 employees. Schools, the Education Authority, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Civil Service provide the rest. Newry is close to the border, so some people here work in the Republic and some commute the other way.
Daisy Hill Hospital and the Southern Trust
Daisy Hill Hospital is one of two acute hospitals run by the Southern Trust, the other being Craigavon Area Hospital. The Trust says Daisy Hill’s emergency department provides care 24 hours a day, every day. The Trust serves Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Dungannon, South Tyrone, and Newry and Mourne, a population of approximately 370,000, and employs approximately 14,000 staff. It lists five hospitals: Craigavon Area, Daisy Hill, Lurgan, South Tyrone and St Luke’s.
Jobs are on the HSC jobs site, not NHS Jobs. Staff are on Agenda for Change bands, and for 2026/27 no payment date had been confirmed in October 2026, because the award needs funding from the Northern Ireland Executive. Hospital services in the Trust change from time to time, so check the Trust’s own pages for the current position at Daisy Hill. Health services in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland explains how the systems differ.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council
The council covers Newry, Downpatrick and the Mournes area, and it delivers waste collection, planning, leisure, tourism and economic development. Education, social care, roads and housing are handled elsewhere.
It recruits through an online portal. Each advertised job comes with a job description, person specification, summary terms and conditions, guidance notes, and an application form with a Fair Employment Monitoring Form. Questions go to [email protected] or 0330 137 4025.
The council publishes some terms. It has a career average pension, with the council contributing 15.5 per cent from April 2026. Annual leave is 24 days, rising to 31 after 10 years’ service, plus 13 public holidays. Staff get free access to council leisure facilities and a counselling helpline. Local council jobs in Northern Ireland compares these terms with other councils.
Working across the border
Newry is a short distance from the Republic, and the Cross Border Partnership for Employment Services provides advice on vacancies, training, social security, taxation and employment rights for Northern Ireland and six border counties. nidirect says contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance can be taken to the Republic for a maximum of three months while looking for work there.
Most public sector jobs in Newry pay UK tax and National Insurance, wherever you live. If you live across the border, your tax residence, any Irish relief and your social security position can work differently. Working in Northern Ireland and living in the Republic sets out the questions and who to ask.
Schools and colleges
Teachers in Northern Ireland have their own pay scale, with no M1 point. The latest confirmed award is 4 per cent from 1 September 2025, so M2 is £32,916, M4 is £37,809 and M6 is £43,830. There was no confirmed offer for 2026/27 in October 2026. Teacher pay in Northern Ireland has the whole scale. Northern Ireland has controlled, Catholic maintained, integrated and Irish-medium schools, and teaching posts are usually advertised by the school or its managing body.
Northern Ireland has six further education colleges, including Southern Regional College, and each recruits its own staff, so check which has a campus near you. The Education Authority takes on classroom assistants and school support staff.
Police, fire and the civil service
PSNI recruitment runs in campaigns, and police pay is set separately from England and Wales. Firefighters in the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service follow the UK-wide NJC award: £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. The Northern Ireland Civil Service recruits through HRConnect, mostly by general competitions that produce merit lists, so offers can come months after a pass and for posts across Northern Ireland. Applying to the NI Civil Service explains the process.
Checks
Criminal record checks come from AccessNI. Basic and standard checks cost £16 and enhanced checks cost £32. Your employer normally starts the application for roles working with children or vulnerable adults. An English DBS certificate is not used for Northern Ireland jobs.
