Public sector jobs in Walsall

Walsall’s two largest public employers are Walsall Council and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the Manor Hospital. Schools, West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service add to that, and Birmingham and Wolverhampton are close enough to widen the search. NHS pay starts at £25,272 on band 2 from April 2026, and council pay at £25,614 on the NJC spine.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

The trust’s main site is Walsall Manor Hospital on Moat Road, and it is the only hospital the trust names on its website. It employs the usual hospital mix of nurses and midwives, doctors, therapists, healthcare assistants, porters, domestic staff and administrators. Agenda for Change rates apply. From 1 April 2026, band 2 is £25,272, band 4 runs from £28,392 to £31,157 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117.

Walsall Council

Walsall’s website groups the council’s work under health and social care, schools and learning, and jobs and careers. As a metropolitan district, the council delivers social care, children’s services, education support, housing and waste itself. Pay follows the NJC spine from SCP 3 (£25,614) from 1 April 2026, which the NJC pay spine guide sets out point by point.

The council’s benefits page gives specifics. It says staff get a minimum of 25 days’ leave a year, pro rata for part-time staff and rising with continuous service, plus 9 bank holiday or concessionary days. Employees can join the Local Government Pension Scheme, which the page says has over 267,000 members and 400 scheme employers.

Pension contributions in the LGPS

LGPS contributions are set by pay band each April. For 2026/27 the main-section rates are:

Pay Main section 50/50 section
Up to £18,400 5.5% 2.75%
£18,401 to £29,000 5.8% 2.9%
£29,001 to £47,300 6.5% 3.25%

Say a council officer is on SCP 10 (£28,608). That falls in the 5.8% band. The 50/50 section halves both the contribution and the pension built up. The LGPS guide covers how the benefits are worked out, and the take-home pay calculator shows the effect on your monthly pay.

Schools

Walsall has maintained schools and academies, and teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026. The government has accepted that award, and the statutory pay document was published on GOV.UK on 16 October 2026. Maintained schools apply the new figures from 1 September 2026, backdated where needed. Teaching assistants and other support staff are on the NJC spine, paid pro rata for the hours worked and usually only in term time.

Police, fire and ambulance

Walsall is one of the seven metropolitan districts in the West Midlands police area, so West Midlands Police is the local force. A constable starts on £32,255 from 1 September 2026. West Midlands Fire Service says it serves seven local authorities, Walsall among them, and firefighters are paid £31,539 in development and £40,358 when competent from 1 July 2026. West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust covers the region.

Wolverhampton and Birmingham both have their own councils and larger trusts. Public sector jobs in Wolverhampton and public sector jobs in Birmingham list the employers there. Pay on national scales is the same, so what changes is the length of the journey.
