Public sector jobs in Wigan
The largest public sector employer in Wigan is the hospital trust, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, usually shortened to WWL. It runs hospital and community services across the borough. Wigan Council, the borough’s schools and the Greater Manchester police, fire and ambulance services make up most of the rest. NHS pay starts at £25,272 on band 2 from April 2026, and council pay at £25,614 on the NJC spine.
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals
WWL describes itself as a major acute and community foundation trust in the North West of England. It says its acute services run from five main sites: the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, Wrightington Hospital, Leigh Infirmary, the Thomas Linacre Centre and Boston House. Community services are delivered from various locations across the borough, so nurses, therapists and healthcare assistants can be based in a clinic or a person’s home as well as on a ward.
Because the trust covers hospital and community work, an advert may name any of those sites. Check the base before you apply, because the five sites are in different places.
The trust pays Agenda for Change rates for England. From 1 April 2026, band 3 runs from £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 6 from £39,959 to £48,117. NHS band 5 pay and jobs shows how a newly qualified nurse moves up those points, and how to use the NHS Jobs website covers saved searches. Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust also lists services in Wigan on its website, and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is the regional ambulance employer.
What the NHS pension takes
NHS staff are enrolled in the NHS Pension Scheme. The rate depends on your pensionable pay, and in 2026/27 it applies to the whole of your pay once you are in a tier.
| Pensionable pay | Member contribution |
|---|---|
| £13,260 to £28,854 | 6.5% |
| £28,855 to £35,155 | 8.3% |
| £35,156 to £52,778 | 9.8% |
Say a healthcare assistant is paid £27,476, the top of band 3. That falls in the 6.5% tier. A band 6 nurse on £39,959 falls in the 9.8% tier. The take-home pay calculator shows what is left after tax, National Insurance and pension.
Wigan Council
Wigan is a metropolitan district, so one council covers every local service in the borough. Council jobs are graded on the NJC pay spine, which starts at SCP 3 (£25,614) from 1 April 2026, and staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. Current vacancies and benefits are listed on the council’s own careers page. How to get a council job explains the usual application steps.
Schools
Wigan has maintained schools and academies. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026 under the award the government has accepted. The statutory pay document was published on GOV.UK on 16 October 2026, so maintained schools apply the new rates from 1 September 2026, backdated where needed. Support staff are on the NJC spine, usually paid pro rata and for term time only. School vacancies appear on Teaching Vacancies as well as on the employer’s own site.
Police, fire and ambulance
Wigan is one of the ten metropolitan districts that make up the Greater Manchester police area under the Police Act 1996, so Greater Manchester Police is the local force. A constable earns £32,255 on joining from 1 September 2026. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is the fire service, and firefighters are paid £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent, from 1 July 2026.
Looking further afield
Wigan borders Bolton, and Manchester is also within reach, so many people compare jobs across the boundary. Public sector jobs in Bolton covers the neighbouring hospital trust and council, and public sector jobs in Manchester covers the city. National pay scales are identical, so the difference is the commute and the number of vacancies.
