Public sector jobs in Bury

Bury Council and Fairfield General Hospital are the two main public employers in Bury. The council covers six towns (Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington and Whitefield), and the hospital is run by Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. Schools and Greater Manchester’s police, fire and ambulance services add to the choice. NHS pay starts at £25,272 on band 2 from April 2026, and council pay at £25,614 on the NJC spine.

Bury Council

Bury Council’s website lists adult and children’s social care, council tax, benefits, housing, libraries, leisure, waste and recycling, planning, roads and school admissions among its services. It also lists armed forces support and immigration and asylum support. Vacancies range from social workers and planners to library staff, housing officers and waste crews.

Pay is on the NJC spine, starting at SCP 3 (£25,614) from 1 April 2026. Social workers and other professionals sit well above that, and social worker pay shows the usual range. Staff join the Local Government Pension Scheme. In 2026/27 the main-section rate is 5.8% on pay of £18,401 to £29,000 and 6.5% on £29,001 to £47,300.

Council salary Main section 50/50 section
£26,016 (SCP 4) 5.8% 2.9%
£30,023 (SCP 13) 6.5% 3.25%
£36,581 (SCP 24) 6.5% 3.25%

Fairfield General Hospital and mental health services

Fairfield General Hospital is on Rochdale Old Road in Bury, and the Care Quality Commission lists Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust as its provider. The advert will name the site where the job is based. Agenda for Change rates apply: from 1 April 2026, band 3 runs from £25,760 to £27,476, band 5 from £32,073 to £39,043 and band 7 from £49,387 to £56,515.

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust lists Bury as one of its boroughs, so mental health and community mental health roles may be advertised under that trust. Both trusts use the NHS Pension Scheme, and the take-home pay calculator shows what a band leaves after deductions.

Schools

Bury has primary and secondary schools, maintained and academy. Teachers outside London start on £34,069 (M1) from 1 September 2026. The government has accepted that award, and the pay document was published on GOV.UK on 16 October 2026, so maintained schools apply it from 1 September 2026, backdated where needed. Teaching assistants and other support staff are on the NJC spine, paid pro rata and generally term time only.

Police, fire and ambulance

Bury is one of the ten metropolitan districts of the Greater Manchester police area, so Greater Manchester Police covers it. A new constable earns £32,255 from 1 September 2026. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is the local fire service, with firefighters on £31,539 in development and £40,358 once competent from 1 July 2026. North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust employs ambulance staff.

Bolton and Salford

Bury shares a boundary with Bolton and is within reach of Salford. Public sector jobs in Bolton covers Bolton’s hospital trust and council, and public sector jobs in Salford covers Salford’s. National pay scales are the same in all three.
